But there is also a chapter describing various state-of-the-art production designs. The strong market dynamics in recent years is reflected in numerous new transmission types. Major lines of evolution treated in the book include the increasing use of electronics, light-weight construction, and the automation of manual gearboxes. Much of the expertise recorded springs from joint projects with German and international car and gear manufacturers.
About the Author
Professor Bernd Bertsche earned his degree and doctorate in mechanical engineering at the Universitaet Stuttgart. Afterwards, he worked for Mercedes-Benz AG in the passenger car development unit followed by a position as professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Albstadt-Sigmaringen. Later, he was appointed at the Universitaet Stuttgart. Since 2001 Professor Bertsche is the ordinary and head for the Institute of Machine Components at the Universitaet Stuttgart.

There is no current book in the field other than this one, so the question is only if it is suitable, since there are no alternatives.
It is a good book. Some of the design process stuff is a bit lightweight, but that is only a minor quibble.
If you work in automotive powertrains or teach a course in automotive engineering, you need this book.

Good, but it could have been better.

First, this book focuses on mechanical transmissions (gearboxes) and barely mentions automatic transmission design and construction. It is rather incomplete for its title "Automotive Transmissions". A more appropriate title would have been "Automotive Gearboxes".
The book sells for roughly $100 for the first edition and at over $200 for the second edition. Unless you are a technical expert working in the field of automotive powertrain, it is not worth the money. The book is highly technical and for the casual reader - even being a mechanical engineer - too theoretical. I would recommend it to engineers involved in train gear design, university professors that teach courses on automotive powertrains, or transmission/powertrain automotive engineers.
