First Story For The Kraken King

Well to start with I read this story in the earlier anthology Burning Up (Berkley Sensation) after the author suggested it as a way for me to decide if I want to read the series.
Mission accomplished, it was amazingly good and the right amount of most everything, action, passion, a bit of humor and I don't know how it could have been much better.
The relationship between Ivy and "Mad Machen" was great, there was no "MINE!" moment that is so popular in a lot of PNR novels, it was a slow building romance (since she kinda hated him to start with it HAD to be slow) and it was timed almost perfectly. (you will love the "shootout" in the bar)
The action parts were done well and not overdone, the thing that had most concerned me was the need (or lack thereof) to have read the Iron Seas books, I am pleased to say it is not required, probably would have made a few things clearer but there are more than enough mentions of things to feed you any needed background.
I think I will be signing up for The Kraken King Part I: The Kraken King and the Scribbling Spinster (A Novel of the Iron Seas) very soon .

One of my favorite series Iron Seas

Loved this book. Great characters, fast paced adventures and hot romantic scenes. I love how Meljean Brook can write a romantic scene but not a sappy cliche one of the many reasons this series is an auto buy for me. I do not give details or spoilers in my reviews you can get that from the synopsis or excerpts. I want to share his much I enjoyed the book and if I would recommend it to others. This I can joyfully do for this book.

Happy to see this released as a stand-alone!

Meljean Brook's Iron Seas series is one of my favorite. She does steampunk and romance very well. I thoroughly enjoy a;; the main novels and the novellas just enhance the world she's already created.
Here there be Monsters tells the story of Ivy and Mad Machen (also seen in Heart of Steel. Yasmeen also makes a few appearances throughout the story. Ivy in desparation to escape London goes to Mad Machen offering herself in his bed in order to secure passage aboard his ship. Things take a twist when she second guesses her offer and ends up leaving in the middle of the night. Machen, for his part, was attracted to Ivy from the start. So when she leaves, he looks for her. For two years he searches for the "redhead who cheated him". He finally finds her and when he does he wants to make sure she doesn't leave again.
This is the perfect story to start out the series if you haven't yet. Meljean Brook does a wonderful job of introducing the alternate world and packing a full story into a little space. Very satisfying, I'm happy it was finally released as a stand-alone
