I never submit reviews, but felt compelled to do so for this text. I studied econometrics and have consequently read many econometrics books, but this one stands out. It's concise and geared towards the practitioner and skips the proofs.

Vukan R. Vuchic is UPS Foundation Professor of Transportation Engineering and professor of city and regional planning at the University of Pennsylvania. He has served as a consultant to scores of companies, public agencies, and city governments around the world: Belgrade in his native Yugoslavia; Edmonton and Toronto, Canada; Lima, Peru; Rome, Italy; and in the United States for the cities of New York and Philadelphia, among others. His other books include Urban Transit Operations, Planning and Economics, and Urban Transit Systems and Technology.

Clear Thinking

Professor Vuchic is the embodiment of clear thinking and common sense. His is a voice of reason in the midst of all the propaganda and ideology of the transportation wars that pop up in every city where people begin to question the dominance of the car culture. He's heard all the anti-rail arguments and debunks them one by one.
This is an eminently readable and well organized book by one of the foremost transportation authorities in America. He compares the US to our peer countries in Europe and Asia and shows how their policies have produced far more livable cities. Our present sorry state is largely due to massive government subsidies and policies favoring the car culture. These have the effect of discourging transit, walking, and bicycling.
Vuchic says change will only come through a combination of "transit incentives" and "auto disincentives", especially the latter. The biggest obstacles are political, not technological.
We must start by creating and promoting the "livable city" vision for our metropolitan regions, then planning an intermodal transportation system to fulfill this vision. Most US cities omit or neglect these steps, focusing primarily on road networks to meet car demand.
If you know that something is terribly wrong with your city and that cars have a lot to do with it, this book will tell you why and what you can do about it.

A must read for every American!

Overall an excellent book. Dr. Vuchic clearly explains the history behind urban transportation planning in the United States. He gives examples of cities in "peer" countries that have done an overall much better job of transportation planning than the vast majority of U.S. cities.

He clearly describes the advantages and disadvantages of virtually every mode of urban transportation; car, bus, light rail, metro, bicycle, etc. In this book Dr. Vuchic writes about the importance of integrated multi-modal transportation systems, as well as the critical need for metropolitan areas to integrate various aspects of urban planning; housing, environment and transportation.

A couple minor things in the book I did not entirely agree with. Some of his comparisons between cities, I did'nt feel were entirely accurate. He mentions Rome in the same sentence as Houston and Detroit when discussing cities with poor transit. Houston & Detroit have some of the worst transit in the developed world, but Rome's transit system, while not the best in Europe, is far ahead of Houston and Detroit. Dr Vuchic mentions Boston in the same sentence as Zurich when describing cities with good transit. Boston's transit system is quite poor by the standards of western Europe. When comparing major world cities Dr Vuchic tries to point to New York as having poor transit relative to London or Tokyo. While New York's transit system isn't as good as Tokyo or London, a much better example of poor transit among major world cities would have been Los Angeles.

Despite what I felt were at times somewhat poor comparisons between cities, I still give this book 5 stars and would highly recommend it.

It's never too late -- every transportation professional should read this.

Information presented on the true costs of our transportation choices is articulately conveyed and insightful. Dr. Vuchic's clear, well-founded discussion of holistic transportation systems is a must read. The "silos" we've created for ourselves in the US transportation planning and design industry are detrimental to our citizens. We abound in 'transit' professionals, 'highway' professionals, and 'bike-ped' professionals, but people with a holistic knowledge of how to integrate these systems are rare birds.

Great - but needs the book to be really effective

Full disclosure - I have not actually done the entire workbook. That said, I've read the book and think that the workbook does not stand up well enough on its own. For example, the first step- day 1 - is to write down all the reasons you want to lose weight and to read that list at least twice a day. In the book she explains that you not only have to read the list, but you also have to ask yourself if that particular reason is important to you. She says this will stop you from just unconsciously reading the list and make you really incorporate it into your thought process. In the workbook, she doesn't get that detailed, and skips the whole thing about asking yourself if it is important. I like the convenience of having the workbook, but get the book as well. I do however think that if you actually do follow the program and incorporate all the steps you will definitely lose weight.

Finally something that works for this obsessed food addict!

I have read every diet/compulsive eating/obsessive eating/overeating/binge eating, etc book on the market & I have tried every diet out there. Nothing works. Some things work initially but then my old demons come back & ruin all my work. I have undergone hypnosis & had counseling & taken prescriptions but nothing ever worked long term.

Well this book really teaches you how to stop those self-sabotaging thoughts, ways, actions. It really does teach you to think like a thin person does. I never understood someone that could actually throw food away or not eat dessert if it was in front of them.

It is initially a good amount of work but far less than most binge eating books,etc. But you really have to do all the steps to break free. You won't need to do them forever & this is only a 6 week program. By the end of the 6 weeks you realize which tools you really need to use forever. But isn't being thin & healthy worth it? I think so.

The book is very clear about eating disorders. If you have one this book isn't for you.

And everything I ever read said you can't lose weight or stop eating until you peel back all the layers of you messed up life or childhood & I have to say it's not true this book gives you an alternative!

For the first time in I would say 10 years I see the light at the end of the tunnel & I can actually say no to overeating.

This book basically helps any diet work great.

Great Workbook

I have been following the Beck Diet solution using the original book. The workbook is a nice addition to the book, but basically is the same information as the original text with the exception of places to write your reflections. I think I'd stick to the original book, and just reflect in a journal. I love the content of The Beck Diet Solution. It approaches weight management from a common sense 'think positive' approach, giving a series of steps to take to gain control of your eating. It's made a big difference for me.

I read this book and thought it was funny and childish. I asked my husband to read it to our girls, who were 7 and 9 at the time, as part of the bedtime routine. My husband put alot of inflection into reading aloud. It was great to hear the laughter from all 3 of them. I found the book again and bought it again. My oldest is 15 and can not wait to read it again. She has to clean her room first. She is busy cleaning.

Fun Book!

We're big Daniel Pinkwater fans in the house. My husband read this one as a child, and we picked it up this summer so my son could read it (age 7). It's ridiculously silly, full of adventure, and was up to the usual Pinkwater standards.

I only gave it 4 stars because my favorite Daniel Pinkwater (written under the name D. Manus Pinkwater) was Lizard Music and in my opinion, nothing ever could top that!

One of Pinkwater's best. This is a must read for every 10 year old with a sense of humor. Actually, it also entertains the adult who happens upon it. I also recommend "Slaves of Spiegel", "Fat Men in Space", and "Alan Mendelsohn, Boy from Mars".

Good compilition and artwork

This is a good compilation of stories, poems, sayings, songs, etc with wonderful artwork to go with them. I liked that all of the stories were relatively short. Some were only four lines and up to about 4-6 pages at longest length. What you choose to read can be chosen for many reasons like age of the child, length of the story, what they are currently learning, and how long they can focus. I strongly suggest that you preview each tale prior to reading to your child as some of the ending could be upsetting (like the gingerbread man who who gets eaten by the wolf or Solomon Grundy who is born on Monday and dies on Sunday.) Many of the stories can be used for teaching moments from science using the five fat peas poem to life choices/morals using the frog princess story about keeping your promises. The more difficult stories like the gingerbread man getting eaten, are better suited to for older children where they can discuss with you the moral (moral of this story: that you can want something so much or want something to be so true that you accept help/advice/support from anyone who offers it without considering the source of that help or advice or if it is something you should be doing/believing in the first place). Many of the poems would work for jump rope or patty-cake games. If you take time to research online I am sure you can also find out how to sing some of the songs like Farmer in the Dell. The book also displays diversity in that people range in skin and hair tones from very pale to dark and including red hair, white hair, and in case of some trolls green hair. Thumbelina is Asian, the frog princess is African, etc. However, I feel that the diversity could have been better and far too many individuals are still Caucasian. Not every page has people on it though, but it still would have been nice if all prominent stories were given a different race for the main character. I just want everyone to be equally represented. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase.

A Good Starter Volume of Fairy Tales

Ordered this for my young nephew. The stories are short and sweet for bedtime reading. The illustrations are not amazing, but they get the job done. Some of the stories/rhymes I have never heard of and are kind of bizarre, but for the most part, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

My son is 10 years old and he loves the stories in this book. This is my second purchase. I gave one as a gift to my son's teacher because the class did a baby shower and the teacher loves books so I figured she will love this book too. The stories are short so you don't have to spend 15 plus minutes reading one story. Some stories don't even take 5 minutes of your time.

The real thing!

I have been working professionally on capybaras since 1981 and this book is a beautiful portrait of what a capybara is like. The drawings, the details of the capybara's behavior are exactly what I would have expected a capybara would be as a pet. The story is also very nice, very well written and fun. Excellent book.

He's One of the Family

Capy's got feelings. He's a ham. He knows how to have fun. He loves the other members of the family. The cats think he's a giant mouse and he takes advantage. When he grows up the family is faced with a dilemma. It's a charming story and the illustrations are delightful. My 6 year old daughter laughs with every page no matter how many times we read it. A sure hit with any kid who loves animals.

The Adventures of Celeste the Cat: Celeste and the Giant Hamster

When we got our pet capybara, Caplin Rous, this book served as a valuable guide for how to take care of a pet capybara. In many ways Caplin is very much like Capyboppy and in other ways he is quite different. It was hilarious when Caplin did something where he looked like one of the wonderful illustrations of Capyboppy in this book. We got him an inner tube just so we could see him sit in it. Turns out he loves that inner tube but we keep it in his pool.
