I can't wait for the next book!
By Tequila Rose
He had restrained himself for Audrey, but this time, he was going to drink from Grace's well, dominate with all the violence in his soul.

Exhibition is just as hawt as The Arrangement. I know that this book just came out, and I'm trying really, really hard to not be needy, but can I have some more? I don't know if I can wait for Hugo's next book without exploding. I love the grittiness of the story, the darkness. The sexual energy and tension between Jason and Grace will MAKE YOU EXPLODE! Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Wow!
By Tonia J. Thomas
Wow! I really enjoyed reading Exhibition! I liked getting to know the characters. There's a bit of darkness, but it's the "right amount". Grace & Jason both have issues, which is the reason they've both turned to the dark side of BDSM and eventually find each other. I look forward to reading more from Nicolette Hugo.

Amazing Read!
By TS
A bit of a dark but very steamy novel. Jason is a photographer and a dominant, Grace is an exhibitionist and Jason feels the perfect muse for his next exhibition and in the process explore their dark desires. Lots of emotion these characters are very complex, I loved the story very hot and intense. Amazing Read!

The Real Right Returns: A Handbook for the True Opposition, by Daniel Friberg

The Right is coming back. After decades of humiliation and political failures, the opposition is reorganising, catching up with the times, and getting itself in order. It is none too soon. Europe faces numerous challenges, challenges which the entrenched, incompetent elites of politics, academia, and the mass media are unable and unwilling to confront. Uncontrolled immigration, the mindless waste of resources, and destruction wrought by consumer society upon the very core of Western man — these are problems posing questions which the ‘establishment’ cannot answer.

Daniel Friberg, MBA, is CEO of the Swedish mining corporation Wiking Mineral and was a founding member of the Swedish metapolitical think tank, Motpol. He has a long history in the Swedish opposition, and was one of the founders of Arktos.

Review
"Gone are the days where creatures of the Right such as myself can be content with laughing at and ridiculing the jackanapes of the Left; we must now recognise them for the deadly enemies they are and fight them as such. Friberg's book will be a key component in the arsenal which must be assembled for that fight." - Mark Gullick, Postcards from Traumaville

"This is one of the most well-moderated, least ideologically shrill books I've read about politics. Though it is charming, with a clear and wry wit, there's precious little of the Messianic; in fact, it works hard to debunk the more mystical facets of contemporary politics - including White exceptionalism - in favor of common sense and paying attention to the facts on the ground...There's a gem of observation on nearly every page... Friberg offers a prescription for a healthy and vital Right." - Ann Sterzinger, Counter-Currents

"Every word rings true." - Greg Johnson, Counter-Currents

"A truly excellent introduction to the New Right and the forces it struggles against - clear, direct and no-nonsense book." - Richard Rudgley, author and TV presenter

"The Real Right Returns is already a best seller in the Alternative Right... The success of this book is simple: it is hard hitting, optimistic and very simple to grasp. In only a few dozen pages, the author summarizes the political positions of the Swedish New Right, its tactics, and its concrete advice for the AltRight activists worldwide." - Rémi Tremblay, Council of European Canadians

The most valuable part is a discussion of meta-politics, how we were softened to accept Marxism.
By Graham H. Seibert
What does one learn from this book?

First of all that Sweden has been involved in the so-called new right for longer than one would imagine. It is finally coming into its own. It is closely linked with the French new right, exemplified by Friberg's Arctos Media stablemates Guillaume Faye and Alan De Benoist.

It is decidedly European. This book does not talk much about the United States. Europe's issues are somewhat different, and certainly the chronology of their development has been different

Friberg talks about the difference between the real right and the so-called conservatives in modern European and American politics. The so-called conservatives are advocates of globalization, immigration and the dissolution of national identity. They do not recognize ethnicity or nationality. They do not recognize the distinct interests of the peoples within a nation.

Establishment right-wing parties' locus of action is at the national level, removed from the hoi polloi. No established party seems to favor the departmental/provincial or local governments over the national government. They favor bureaucracies, and are quite comfortable with central planning, having "experts" in the capital cities make blanket decisions that favor apply uniformly within the realm. They are not interested in preserving cultures or the multiple ethnicities native to a given country. While they may, in a self-congratulatory fashion, allow immigrants from the Middle East to cling to their tribal ways as they dilute the native Europeans, they're not politically thrilled when Bretons, Occitanes and Savoyards in France maintain their individuality. Conservativism as it has been practiced favors big business at the expense of the people, the center at the expense of the fringe.

The New Right favors the people. It is conservative in the sense of conserving what the people have among themselves. In some senses it is rather socialistic. It appeals to the ethos, the traditional culture, and the mutual support that is present in a traditional society. It celebrates not the atomized individual, but the local community in which that individual exists. It celebrates not that atomized individual, but his family, his heritage, and his progeny.

There is a triumphal tone throughout the book. Friberg believes that the European traditional left is collapsing. It is certainly the case that membership in the New Right parties, such as the Sweden Democrats, is burgeoning. He also credits the Internet with the decline of the traditional centers of liberal power, the newspapers.

Friberg has a valuable chapter on meta-politics, the cultural precondition for political change. People do not support a political system that is out of step with their beliefs. Italian Communist Gramsci noted that the Communists had been unsuccessful in attempting to the socialize factories after World War I because the people were simply not ready for it. The Frankfurt school set out to change culture, and thus it is prepare the intellectual soil for a communist takeover. To this end they changed the infiltrated and changed, the whole schooling system in both the United States and Europe. They introduced political correctness. They introduced idealistic notions such as the New World order, multiculturalism, diversity, and so on. As they trumpeted these notions they likewise downplayed the concepts of nationalism, differences among the races, and other things were antithetical to their program. Once this indoctrination had been done, the populations were prepared to be seeded with leftist thought. The seeds took root.

I witnessed it to some degree as a high school student in the 1950s, and especially as an undergraduate at Reed College from 1960 to 1962, then Berkeley 1965-66. It was a wrenching shift from the values I had internalized growing up. I questioned myself, and then questioned the indoctrination. I was among a minority who stuck with traditional values. My grown children, and most of their peers, have been thoroughly indoctrinated in cultural Marxism, from children's television through Howard Zinn in high school history and Andrea Dvorkin in college.

An interesting observation is that in the belief of the author the leftists were dominant from 1945 through 1989. 1989 seems like an early date at which to fix the beginning of their demise. It appears to me that their power remains quite strong today to this observer. However, Friberg sees the traditional left as being rather in retreat. He scoffs at their increasingly frantic and futile efforts to stem to stanch the rise of the new right, the Identitarian movement.

Friberg offers specific advice for should be done in Sweden. If a Swede is approached by a journalist from the left, or especially somebody from the Expo organization, he should simply say "no comment." Do not talk to Expo. You have nothing to gain. This echoes what Vox Day advised Americans in his book, SJWs Always Lie.
There is a new line of thought emerging worldwide, a rebellion in the confrontation of culture against cultural Marxism. In the United States this is exemplified by the rise of Donald Trump in the current election cycle. Perhaps the most telling thing about Trump is his defiance of political correctness. The American populace is tired of it. The American press absolutely cannot understand, cannot fathom, how Donald Trump can so thoroughly ignore political correctness can be cheered and celebrated by the populace. They are tired of it.

One sees the same in Europe. Nigel Farage in England it does a wonderful job of putting down the cultural left. Marine Le Pen and her niece do the same in France. Geert Wilders does it in Holland. It is marvelous to see these voices rise up. Even when Wilders is brought to court for supposed hate speech against Muslims or something like that, it is now more of a victory than a defeat. What he wins by confronting political correctness far overshadows what he may lose in fines and so on. The left is simply losing the ability to stanch the wave of revulsion at the mass immigration and political correctness.

Friberg includes a wonderful piece on the difference between men and women. We are genetically, culturally and traditionally different in that we have different roles to fill in society. Unfortunately, our leftist dominated education has attempted to force upon us the notion that gender doesn't matter and that we are all equal. This is not true. Men have a leadership role to fill and we should willingly step into it. We should marry and pass on not only our genes but our culture. We should marry early and be loyal to our women. His challenge to women is even harder. Give up the feminist myth that you can "have it all" and commit to being, above all, a good mother. Children and grandchildren are indeed, as the Bible has it, an older woman's "crown of glory." More concretely, government safety nets are fraying worldwide. Without family, there will be nobody to care for you in old age.

That is the last chapter of the book. So, here ends the book review as such. I follow up with my own interpretation of where the threads lead to next.

* * * * * * *

Among the words that do not appear in this short book are Jews, banks, evolution, intelligence and education.

Modern conservativism, free-market liberalism, is an economic competition that assumes all people are equal. There are winners and losers, a fact that is accepted as the natural order. It has always been thus.

Northern European societies especially have had a significant belief in egalitarianism. Evolutionary psychologist Kevin McDonald says that this was essential in their harsh Nordic homelands. The survival of the group was of paramount importance. Therefore the relatively homogeneous groups of Norsemen would overlook individual differences in ability in order to preserve all individuals. That was best for the survival of the tribe. It provided them with more warriors. Greater numbers were more important than assessing the value of each individual among them. They therefore also had a fairly strong belief in monogamy. Everybody got a mate, although the stronger men in the tribe as always certainly enjoyed a better selection.

This altruism, this mutual support worked well among homogeneous, relatively isolated tribes whose greatest threat was invasion from other tribes. This habit of mind has led the northern Europeans to an altruistic acceptance of people who are altogether different from them, first the Jews, and now Muslims and Africans.

McDonald's most well-known works are a trilogy on the evolutionary psychology of the Jews. Like the northern European peoples, they seek the survival of their own. Unlike the northern Europeans, the Jews for the past 2500 years have lived in diaspora. They have been scattered among host populations who were indifferent, often hostile. Therefore they have evolved the ability to not only exist, but to thrive among people unlike themselves. They have succeeded because they are in general more intelligent than the people among whom they live, and they succeed because they support one another. They support their own group interests above the interests of the groups among which they live.

This has certainly been true in Europe and the Americas. The Jews had dominated banking, the media, entertainment and other industries. They have used this domination to propagate their views, the views which according to this book have so weakened traditional Europeans. To be specific, the Frankfurt School of Horkheimer, Adorno and others, implementing Gramsci's cultural Marxism, was a Jewish project. Let me, the reviewer, emphasize that the word Jew never appears in Friberg's book. It is certainly an intentional omission. He does not need to be picking enemies. I simply bring it up to tie the intellectual concepts of this book in with other modern currents of thought.

McDonald's thesis is that this is not an articulated, conscious survival strategy on the part of the Jews, but rather one that has evolved over the course of 2 1/2 millennia. One can even remark that it is not particularly beneficial to the Jewish population today. As is observed in Friberg's book, they are losing their grip. The ability of the Jewish population and the Jewish culture to reproduce itself in Europe has been at least as badly impacted by sexual ambiguity and immigration as that of European gentiles. As is often the case in evolution, a strategy that evolved as advantageous in one epoch is disadvantageous in the next. Evolution is not an articulated, reasoned process.

The situation with Middle Eastern and African immigrants to Europe is the opposite of that of the Jews. Like them they are interested in their own evolutionary goals, which are antithetical to those of the host populations. Unlike the Jews, they are less capable intellectually and less controlled temperamentally than their host populations. The Nordic countries' altruism is simply misplaced. The immigrants come, in the best of cases, to seek work. However, they generally lack the intellect and the discipline required to succeed in the European workplace. In the worst case they come simply to sponge off the wealthy Europeans, for whom they have no respect, and whom they regard as dupes to be parasitized and exploited. In neither case does the Europeans' altruism any longer serve their evolutionary interests.

To repeat, a word that does not appear anywhere in the book is "Jew." The great majority of the Swedish press has been owned by Jews. Friberg mentions Expo, a publication which he equates with the Southern Poverty Law Center in United States, which zealously prosecutes its enemies, conservatives. What he does not note is that the ethnicity of Robert Aschberg, the driving force behind Expo, and Morris Dees, the driving force behind the Southern poverty Law Center. Likewise, George Soros is a persistent backer of unlimited African and Moslem immigration to Europe. There are ethnic interests at play which Friberg chooses not to address.

Friberg does not delve into how deeply compromised our entire system of education has become. Vox Day's advice in the above-referenced book is that when an organization has been thoroughly compromised by SJWs there is no point in trying to fix it. It is better to start over.

In K-12 education this means avoiding government schools. Choose a private school or home schooling. Tellingly, these alternatives are illegal in Sweden and Germany. The classic American text is "Teach your own," though Calderwood and many others tell you how to do it. The Internet is a great boon to home schooling, delivering curricular materials and bringing like-minded parents together.

Today's University is already obsolete. Its bloated cost structure simply cannot stand in the face of distance learning over the Internet. Accreditation is the major remaining problem: how to certify that the individual in question actually mastered the material at hand, and thus ensure the integrity of the degree awarding process. This problem, of course, exists on campus as well. Outsourcing term papers to India is a big business. In any case, it will become increasingly easy to circumvent the Marxist gatekeepers of American higher education.

The Internet is loosening up even graduate education and academics. People whom the academic left reviles, like Richard Lynn, Brion McClanahan and Kevin MacDonald (above) are able to get their voices heard despite concerted efforts on campus to shut them up.

That's my conclusion. I agree with Friberg that the tide is going out on cultural Marxism. However, feminism, the emasculation of our men, and the usurpation by government of the rights and responsibilities of self-sufficient individuals with regard to safeguarding their health and income and childrearing have done their damage. We have lost the drive to form families and bear children. Just as important, and often overlooked, is the fact that we have destroyed the institutions such as schools, church, Boy Scouts and the like that used to socialize them to perpetuate our culture. The challenge is even more formidable than he would have it.

An Excellent Work!
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this work after hearing the author's interview with Red Ice Radio, and needless to say, I was not disappointed! Mr. Friberg presents all the essentials for a strong and successful European right that will stand tall in the face of all obstacles. Quite the primer!

This short book might be useful also for a high school government class
By Koos deWet
In these chaotic times, and as various political flavors and factions clamor for power or half solutions, this book stands out as a positive read on how to truly turn around the decay and make a thriving community. Simple measures to take on the egregious madness that is killing our people—and harming those that the Dominant Paradigm (PC) claim to care for. A book to lower the blood pressure of those who witness our world degrading further every day while all too many politicians and NGOs encourage a further blissful run off the cliff to the lemmings.

This short book might be useful also for a high school government class, along with a reading of Marcus Willinger's book Generation Identity, in a discussion of the differences between Right and Left.

A Vision for Venture Capital: Realizing the Promise of Global Venture Capital and Private Equity (Winthrop Group), by Peter A. Brooke

This book takes an insider's look at the frontier of international finance. "A Vision for Venture Capital" chronicles a distinguished career on the frontier of international finance during the past half-century. Peter Brooke has been called 'the Johnny Appleseed of venture capital' for his role in the industry's spectacular growth from a small base on the East Coast of the United States in the 1960s to its highly visible role today in economies all over the world. The key to Brooke's success - and his lasting legacy - is his vision for the industry as an essential element of economic growth and development. At a time when some believe that venture capital's best days are behind it, and private equity has come under harsh criticism in the United States and elsewhere, "A Vision for Venture Capital" offers a fresh look at why the industry exists and how it can fulfill its potential in the twenty-first century.

Interesting Insights On The Development of The Venture Capital Industry In the U.S. and Abroad
By Aakar Vachhani
I recently finished reading A Vision for Venture Capital: Realizing the Promise of Global Venture Capital and Private Equity. The book is an (assisted) autobiography chronicling the storied career of Peter A. Brooke. As founder of TA Associates and Advent International, Mr. Brooke was crucial to the early development of the venture capital industry - he was truly a pioneer for the industry not only in the U.S. but in his work spreading the venture capital model internationally.

The book is split into two parts. The first half of the book takes you through his career - his development as a venture capitalist, building TA Associates, and then his shift in focus to international investments and the founding of Advent International. The second half of the book covers how to add value through venture investing and Mr. Brooke's outlook for the future. If you don't have time to read the whole book, I highly recommend the second part - there are some great takeaways and you still get many anecdotes from his storied career.

It was clear that Mr. Brooke is passionate about the true role of venture capital and it was a point he drove home throughout the book. Below is an excerpt that I felt exemplified Mr. Brooke's ideology.
When discussing the industry's early moves into international markets and the difficulty getting U.S. based investors to see potential Mr. Brooke said:

"It didn't seem to have occurred to many venture capitalists and private equity managers that they could be a force for economic and social progress in the world. To me, however, this is the whole point of what we do. The frontier in the industry is wherever the skills of venture capital and private equity managers can be applied to address economic problems such as poverty, underdevelopment, and lack of opportunity, along with the many social ills associated with them. To put it another way, the pioneers today are those who apply their entrepreneurial spirit and problem-solving skills not only to make a profit for their investors and themselves but also to improve the lives of others."

Overall, I think it's a great read, especially for those starting out or considering a career in venture capital or private equity. You get a lot of history on the industry's development and can really broaden your mindset on how to approach investing. The book is also great for those involved with venture capital and private equity investing in the emerging markets. Underdeveloped, frontier markets arguably stand to benefit the most from private equity and venture capital investment and it's sure to be where much of the industry's growth comes in the coming years. Approaching these markets with some of Mr. Brooke's insights and lessons would surely be beneficial.

Orientation, by Daniel Orozco

A new employee's first-day office tour includes descriptions of other workers' most private thoughts and actions.

"Orientation" is a story from Daniel Orozco's critically acclaimed collection of the same name, which leads the reader through the hidden lives and moral philosophies of bridge painters, men housebound by obesity, office temps, and warehouse workers. He reveals the secret pleasures of late-night supermarket trips for cookie binges, exceptional data entry, and an exiled dictator's occasional piss on the U.S. embassy. A love affair blooms between two officers in the impartially worded pages of a police blotter; during an earthquake, the consciousness of the entire state of California shakes free for examination.

Orientation introduces a writer at the height of his powers, whose work surely invites us to reassess the landscape of American fiction.

Cutting Edge Absurdity
By Pop Bop
There are lots of wordsmiths out there playing about with post-postmodern approaches to writing - messing with fonts and format, experimenting with found words and phrases, pushing the envelope on structure and narrative. Some of this is interesting, but very little of it is deadpan funny, and even less of it is at all restrained or tightly controlled. There is often a giddy "look at me, mom" feel to the work.

Not so here. This Kindle freebie is the title story from the "Orientation" collection, not the entire book. But it works just fine as an introduction to Orozco's style. He seems to have mastered "edgy-bemused" with a spicy pinch of exaggeration. This story, basically an orientation tour given to a new office employee, has a remarkable rhythm. It starts out slowly, with just hints of excess. But as the lecture proceeds it goes further and further off the tracks until we get to the point where the new employee is being instructed on how to act when his cubicle neighbor is arrested as a serial murderer. The build is so slow and carefully calibrated, (and wildly funny), that the reader is never sure how exactly he ended up being led so far astray. Which, it seems to me, is the author's larger point.

Anyway, this is brief; it's free; it's a hoot. So indulge yourself.

Well written, but not totally satisfying
By morehumanthanhuman
This story was well-written and I liked the premise a lot. A worker, on his or her first day in a new office, is given an orientation. In addition to facts that are commonly shared, the new employee gets a number of facts that couldn't possibly be know. It's an interesting premise, but I enjoyed the story more the closer it was to reality. As the facts shared got more and more absurd and out there, the story began to unravel a bit for me.

Secret Daughter: A Novel, by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

“Moving and thought-provoking and informative and imaginative and beautifully executed.  What a wonderful story!”
—Mary Jane Clark

“This book is a must for anyone touched by adoption, or India, or the delicate dynamic between adolescent girls and their mothers.”
—Sujata Massey, author of Shimura Trouble

Secret Daughter, a first novel by Shilpi Somaya Gowda, explores powerfully and poignantly the emotional terrain of motherhood, loss, identity, and love through the experiences of two families—one Indian, one American—and the child that binds them together. A masterful work set partially in the Mumbai slums so vividly portrayed in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire, Secret Daughter recalls the acclaimed novels of Kim Edwards and Thrity Umrigar, yet sparkles with the freshness of a truly exciting new literary voice.

From Publishers Weekly
Gowda's debut novel opens in a small Indian village with a young woman giving birth to a baby girl. The father intends to kill the baby (the fate of her sister born before her) but the mother, Kavita, has her spirited away to a Mumbai orphanage. Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Somer, a doctor who can't bear children, is persuaded by her Indian husband, Krishnan, to adopt a child from India. Somer reluctantly agrees and they go to India where they coincidentally adopt Kavita's daughter, Asha. Somer is overwhelmed by the unfamiliar country and concerned that the child will only bond with her husband because Asha and Krishnan will look alike, they will have their ancestry in common. Kavita, still mourning her baby girl, gives birth to a son. Asha grows up in California, feeling isolated from her heritage until at college she finds a way to visit her birth country. Gowda's subject matter is compelling, but the shifting points of view weaken the story. (Mar.)

From Booklist
In her engaging debut, Gowda weaves together two compelling stories. In India in 1984, destitute Kavita secretly carries her newborn daughter to an orphanage, knowing her husband, Jasu, would do away with the baby just as he had with their firstborn daughter. In their social stratum, girls are considered worthless because they can’t perform physical labor, and their dowries are exorbitant. That same year in San Francisco, two doctors, Somer and Krishnan, she from San Diego, he from Bombay, suffer their second miscarriage and consider adoption. They adopt Asha, a 10-month-old Indian girl from a Bombay orphanage. Yes, it’s Kavita’s daughter. In alternating chapters, Gowda traces Asha’s life in America—her struggle being a minority, despite living a charmed life, and Kavita and Jasu’s hardships, including several years spent in Dharavi, Bombay’s (now Mumbai’s) infamous slum, and the realization that their son has turned to drugs. Gowda writes with compassion and uncanny perception from the points of view of Kavita, Somer, and Asha, while portraying the vibrant traditions, sights, and sounds of modern India. --Deborah Donovan

Review
This wise debut moves deftly between the child’s two mothers and cultures.

Moving and satisfying, great debut...
By Denise Crawford
This beautifully written book, Secret Daughter: A Novel, is one that will linger in my thoughts for a long time. It's a poignant story about family -- just who is "family" and what it means to be a part of one. It's also a brilliantly written testimony to mothers everywhere, for "if the mother falls, the whole family falls."

Asha (Hope) was secretly named Usha (Dawn) by her birth mother, Kavita, and is adopted from an Indian orphanage by a married American couple when she is just a year old. Kavita, already grieving the infanticide of a previous daughter in a society that prefers male infants, had made the long journey to Shanti to deliver her 3-day-old child there for safety so that her husband and his family would not also destroy this second unwanted female child. She left her daughter with only a thin silver bracelet and a wish that Asha be allowed to live, grow up, and perhaps have a better life.

Somer and Krishnan Thakkar, both doctors -- she's a pediatrician and he's a neurosurgeon -- have been unable to have a child. He is Indian and came to America to attend medical school and stayed for a better life. She married him without fully appreciating the Indian heritage and his connection to the land of his birth and to the family and traditions he left behind there. When they adopt Asha and bring her back to America to raise, little do they realize that their new beloved daughter will one day defy her parents and seek to restore their connection to their Indian relatives despite the fact that she may hurt them when she begins to trace her birth parents to find out who she is and why they gave her up for adoption.

The story moves forward in time from 1984 to 2009, and is told from the viewpoints of the three main females of the story - Somer, Kavita, and Asha. All are women who have a very strong feeling about motherhood -- and about their own mothers. In addition, each woman sees a different India and comes to appreciate the country in different ways even as they realize that "Mother India does not love all her children equally."

The story of each woman's journey to epiphany and self-realization is very moving and satisfying. I highly recommend this book.

An extraordinary debut novel from a Canadian author!
By Paul Weiss
SECRET DAUGHTER tells two heartbreaking stories, worlds apart but inseparably linked. The first is about infertility in North American woman and the extreme lengths that some hopeful mothers- and fathers-to-be will take to achieve the elusive goal of parenthood. The second graphically illustrates the demeaning treatment of women and girls in India combined with the overpowering social pressure that Indian women feel to bear sons. A common beginning breaks into two tales and then finds common ground once again at the conclusion of Shilpi Somaya Gowda's brilliant debut novel.

Kavita Merchant, having had her first child heartlessly ripped away from her and simply "disposed of" in the manner of an unwanted chattel, defies her family, her husband and her culture's social mores to spirit her second child, Usha, into an orphanage. All that Kavita can bequeath to her daughter is a small silver bangle and life itself. Separated by two oceans, thousands of miles and an entire universe of cultural differences, Somer and Krishnan Thakkar, both successful doctors in North America are struggling with Somer's inability to conceive and carry a baby to full term. All attempts at producing their own child having failed, they reluctantly decide, in homage to Krishnan's ethnicity and his family, to adopt an Indian child from an orphanage in Mumbai. SECRET DAUGHTER is the story of two families and the life of the daughter who was given the gift of a chance at a life that nobody but her mother wanted her to have.

Although Gowda's concerns and dismay over the Indian culture's preferential treatment for sons is clear enough, she does not (thankfully) indulge in heavy-handed proselytizing or hand-wringing. The story is quite shocking, compelling, absorbing and heartbreaking enough even when it is told in a relatively factual, straightforward, almost banal manner. Indeed, the effect on North American sensibilities may be more powerful and poignant for Gowda's presentation of the practice of killing unwanted daughters as simply the way it is. I'll confess to my western confusion over the matriarchs of Indian families who seem to have the bizarre ability to forget or ignore the fact that, at one point in their lives, they too were baby girls who were probably, at best, unwelcome additions to their families.

Some readers will almost certainly be disappointed at the lack of closure that the finale of the story brings to all of its characters. For my money, this open-ended conclusion keeps SECRET DAUGHTER out of the potentiall pitfall of becoming trite or sappy. Life, after all, goes on. Families and cultures are dynamic, evolving things and, as individuals, our life on this earth is all too short. Our individual contributions are only a small part of that development. If we can all agree that the murder of infant Indian girls is unacceptable in a modern world whether it is in India or North America, then I think we can also agree that Shilpi Somaya Gowda, the novel SECRET DAUGHTER and the story of little Usha's life, has made a notable contribution toward that change.

Highly recommended.

Gaps in the story
By Mamochka
I agree with the reviewer who wrote "Good Plot, Weak Characters." The idea of following two families who do not know they are connected, one who places a child for adoption because she is a girl, and one who lives halfway around the world who adopts the girl, is wonderful. Ann Hood did this to some extent in "The Red Thread," but she did not follow the Chinese mothers for the rest of their lives, as Shilpa Gowda follows Kavita. Kavita is married to Jasu, who had their first-born daughter killed. They can only afford one child, and he will do anything for a son. When Kavita produces yet another girl child, she runs away from her small village to an orphanage in Mumbai, to leave the wrong-gendered infant and spare her the fate of her older sister. Meanwhile, we meet Somer (American, Caucasian, Protestant) and Krishnan (Indian, Hindu), a young married couple living in California whose efforts to give birth have produced nothing but grief. They travel to India to adopt the little girl that Kavita placed in the orphanage, whom they call Asha (Hope).

(What comes below talks about more of the plot than you may want to know if you plan to read the book.)

It is not clear what attracts Somer and Krishnan to each other in the first place; perhaps Somer is drawn in by the exotic, foreign Krishnan, so different than anything else in her otherwise plain vanilla life. Somer has little if any interest in Krishnan's culture, so unless Krishnan is trying to escape all memories of India (and there is nothing that indicates this), it is hard to see what attracts him to Somer (yes she is bright and attractive, but can someone really love another person who has no interest in his native land/culture?). The adoption and raising of Asha hold this couple together, but when Asha leaves the nest for college and a fellowship in India, the cracks in the marriage show all too clearly.

Meanwhile, Kavita gives birth to the long-dreamed of son, Vijoy (Victory). The family's move from village to city (Mumbai, naturally) proves economically sound, but plays havoc with the traditional family bonds, as Vijoy is influenced more by friends than family, and grows up to be a drug dealer. Why his parents take his ill-gotten money when they know what he is doing is not clear to me, as Kavita is portrayed as a long-suffering saint and Jasu slowly reveals that, despite having his first child killed, he has (almost) a heart of gold.

Growing up, Asha has shown some curiousity about her birth family and birth culture This section of the book needs considerably more substance if we are to believe that Asha travels to India to stay with her father's relatives whom she does not know and winds up wholeheartedly embracing the family (and vica versa) and the culture, and of course, finding love (while writing prize-winning articles to boot). She also searches for her birth family, which is totally believable, but the resolution is wishy-washy.

One gaping omission is the role of the caste system in the life of Indian society. Does caste really play NO role in this story? How can that possibly be? Why is it never mentioned when it is so important in Hindu India? Would all of Krishnan's family truly embrace this adopted child, most likely from a lower caste than they? Would Asha really be given such an honored role at her grandfather's funeral? Is the author saying that caste is meaningless in India, or does she just wish that were true?

This could have been a very compelling story about cross-cultural and transracial adoption if it had examined more thoroughly and realistically each member of the adoption triad and the cultures that they came from.
