Not a good edition

The story is a good one. I like this author, but in this print edition the type is so small that I have difficulty reading it. It makes for very tedious and tiresome reading which is a shame since it is a good book. Find another edition if you can.

About the Author

H. Scott Fogler is the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research interests include flow and reaction in porous media, fused chemical relations, gellation kinetics, and chemical reaction engineering problems in the petroleum industry. He has graduated 37 Ph.D. students and has more than 200 refereed publications in these areas. Fogler is the AIChE 2008 President-elect. He has chaired ASEE’s Chemical Engineering Division, served as director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, earned the Warren K. Lewis Award from AIChE for contributions to chemical engineering education, and received the Chemical Manufacturers Association’s National Catalyst Award. He is the author of the classic Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering, Fourth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2006).

Steven E. LeBlanc is Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo. He chaired the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department for ten years, chaired the ASEE Chemical Engineering Education Division, and co-chaired the 2007 ASEE Chemical Engineering Summer School for Faculty.

Reading material for a college class..proves handy outside the classroom as well.

Returned this book after I was done with the class, only to find out that I needed it to help make some difficult choices after getting my degree.

If you can find it used, don't pass it up!!! If you can't...seriously consider buying it because sometimes your decision making process is woefully lacking and it's best to have some other methodology available.

I purchased this text book and it is great book for the class that I am takeing. The book does a great job at breaking down the thought process behind solving problems. Explaining how we miss the solution to a problem by looking at the wrong part of the issue. Many times we over analyze things so much that we cant see the most simple things.

Very sleek presentation of topic area; accessible for non-specialist

I can warmly recommend this book as a highly accessible textbook on some of the most interesting topics in biochemistry. The book is largely self-contained, and thus is surprisingly accessible to a wide variety of readers, even those with very limited exposure to biochemistry.

Since Prof. Frayn keeps his focus keenly on human examples, the entirety of the book is relevant to readers. Frayn's book is relatively brief (for a science textbook), and thus does not have the encyclopedic feel of a typical undergraduate biochemistry textbook. What a non-specialist reader does get from this book is a solid understanding of metabolic processes and tremendous insight into his or her own body.

I would like to call out several features of this book that I found especially nice: Prof. Frayn's holistic approach combines topics from anatomy, medicine, biology, biochemistry, and nutrition in a single integrated presentation, allowing the reader to make connections that otherwise might be difficult. As I mentioned previously, the text is largely self-contained (and he has cross-references throughout the book, making it easy to follow), so it can be read by a wide audience (I would recommend that a reader have a basic understanding of chemistry at the high school level before reading this book.) Prof. Frayn also puts much of the material in a variety of tables, diagrams, and boxes, which helps present the material in convenient "chunks."

The relatively short length of the book (the text is about 350 pages, with the references, index, and front material making up the balance of the page count) allows the author to concentrate his attention on the "good stuff" (particularly interesting topics in metabolic studies) and still keep the pace of the book flowing. Finally, Prof. Frayn is an excellent writer, and his prose is fun to read, without being cloying.

I can recommend this book to the lay person who is prepared to make an effort to follow a textbook-level presentation of this material.

This book makes nutritional biochemistry as readable as a novel; I love the way this author makes technical details come alive. This book also makes a great gift for persons interested in metabolism.

Excellent

I have probably more than 60 textbooks on Advanced Nutrition, Sports Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition, published in last 5 years, from s.Gropper through Krauses to A. Catharine Ross... But in this book found some details what is in no other. For nutritionist(or in USA maybe dietetian), high level fitness experts, and nonspeciallist doctors I recommend it highly. Book is readable, but also filled with some interesting data, diagrams, tables and explanation. This book is of course not for someone who has not good knowledge about nutrition, but very useful addition to that subject for understanding it deeper. Really sorry that Mr Frayn not have writen another book, like his presentation style so much.

Good, but very basic

I bought this book since a University offered me a Molecular Medicine postgraduate class. The truth is I find the book too basic, but I gave it four stars because even though It's simple, It has a very good order and few but very well searched examples. It is a very good choice for somebody willing to have a first approximation with molecular medicine; for somebody with background in the subject I don't recommend it.

I am creating a module in moleculr medicine for postgraduate trainees in haematology. I feel that they can read this easily to obtain a useful background. There are not as many illustrations as in similar books, but the text is clear and the illustrations appropriate.

A Weatlth of Information for a Great Price!

Very informative. I've been home-brewing for a few years now and would consider myself an intermediate-level home-brewer but still learning. With this in mind I didn't use it as much for the step-by-step explanations on how to get started in brewing (although it did provide in-depth instructions), but rather used it for advice on moving from extract to all-grain brewing. It definitely helped me get off on the right track. It really digs into some of the science behind the brewing process, but in a simple way so people understand the why and how instead of just following steps. There was also a lot of information and history about beer that I found interesting and hadn't known. This is a great book if you're looking for an all-encompassing reference about beer including beer history, ingredients, making your first batch, troubleshooting techniques, and some great sounding recipes. For the money, you can't beat it.

A rarity: A well written guide book.

I am an amateur home brewer with a bunch of great brews under my belt, however, I haven't brewed in a while because I lost the passion. A friend got this book for my recent birthday and I am back! This book has instantly revived my passion for brewing, through engaging writing, detailed recipes, and interesting history! I dug out my carboy and dusted off my hydrometer and my first brew from this book is bubbling away!

It really is great to find a guidebook that is well written, bravo.

Great Information, Great Value!

I have enjoyed good beer for many years and have always thought of brewing my own. I received a brew kit for Christmas and immediately went to my Kindle for more information. This book was the result.

My knowledge of beer is novice at best, but my wine knowledge is fairly advanced. I enjoy good craft brewed beer, but don't know much about it like I do about wine. This book is beautifully written, and the author has a wine background so it fits perfectly to my situation.

The information given in this book is vast, but well written, and dollar for dollar, I don't think you will find a better value in a beginner beer brewing guide than this one. The author also cites a huge amount of additional material, including a vast array of online resources that will further your education of this awesome hobby. I would have gladly paid $25 for this guide, but $2.50 - it's a steal!

Aikido Library Essential

Saito Morihiro was a teacher of martial aiki, and conveyed the presence of pre-war aikido better than any living person until his death a few years ago. While the photos are not the best (taken from the 16mm films of Saito; same ones later done in the 5-volume series), the explanation of hitoemi and basic training exercises are worth the price.
This is not the most "slick" instructional book out there, but for any serious aikidoka it's a worthwhile addition to the library and will become a useful reference that is timeless.

What a sweet book. Though most of the letters are from Bembo, it is so heartfelt and lovely; I could not put it down. The history which proceeds the letters and the plates (clearly wood carved etchings) capture both period and place. Through this small volume you can be in the Ferrara of the sixteenth century. The people come to life, not as creations in time, but as real human beings.
