About the Author
Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Duke University. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, he received his doctorate from the University of Oxford. He developed his interest in applied macroeconomics early in his career while working at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Before moving to Duke, Hoover taught economics at the University of California, Davis, and at Oxford. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics (1988), Causality in Macroeconomics (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and The Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics (Cambridge University Press, 2001), as well as nine edited volumes and more than 100 academic articles on macroeconomics, monetary economics, econometrics, the methodology and philosophy of economics, and the history of economic thought. He is past chairman of the International Network for Economic Method, the past president of the History of Economics Society and a former editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology. He is currently the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University.

The best practical macroeconomics textbook that I have come across - but note that it is only an introduction

I studied macroeconomics in the 1980s, with a textbook and professor that had no clue about what was going on in the real economy. We studied the IS/LM model but no attempt was made to relate it or any other model to reality. I've recently been browsing macroeconomics textbooks in the hope that 25 years later there would exist a textbook that deals with the real world and not purely with theoretical models. I like theoretical constructions, but they need to be put in perspective. Economics is not yet as developed a science to produce just one explanatory model. Sadly most books are just as useless as they were 25 years ago.

The current book is a decent attempt to link economic theory with the real world economy. It discusses real economy issues and it does not use the format of having all real economy material in small boxed entries. It tries to be more integrative. It discusses technological change, financial markets, but also more traditional themes like the multiplier. Since very few books actually attempts to make this connection, I have given the current book four stars. Given lack of competition with other books, there is great room for improvement. The current content is probably worth THREE stars, but that is as good as it gets.

It really is amazing when you look at a textbook (including this one), you are left with the feeling that macroeconomists really know about most things going on in the world. How ironic. The picture presented is sadly too much of a façade. If you want to get a deeper understanding I would advice getting one of the books that critique economics from within (e.g. Debunking Economics - Revised and Expanded Edition: The Naked Emperor Dethroned?) and a modern overview of different macroeconomic views (e.g. Modern Macroeconomics: Its Origins, Development And Current State) - but only after you've read a textbook. Also some economic history would be very helpful to read. There are so many choices so I cannot describe them here. At the very least read a pop-history book about the financial crisis (e.g. The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine). From there you can venture into more serious writing about older times.

One more piece of advice, when you pick further readings, try to avoid authors that have an axe to grind. There are many people out there right now that just want to bash economics (or certain schools in economics). You are not well served by reading these books because they are biased. What you want is books that lay down the facts.

Back to this book and some of its weaknesses:
- I do not understand why the book uses the term "intermediate" in its title. This book can clearly be a first book on macroeconomics for undergraduate students. So except some 150 pages of really simple stuff (like mean, standard deviation, correlation, regression). In fact I am often left thinking that this book is written for people without basic prerequisites.
- There is no discussion of different schools of macroeconomists. There should at least have been an introduction with useful, relevant references. Terms like Monetarism, RBC, Neo-Keynesianism, and Keynesianism deserve some discussion.
- The focus is a bit too strong on a national economy and I would have liked a stronger treatment describing inter-linkages between countries. As it stands the focus is on the US. Many will like this, but some will consider it a weakness. We have one world after all.
- Clearly the author does not have personal experience of using macroeconomics to provide advice. It would have been very interesting to link the models in the book to blogs and economic advisory services.

I reviewed several other books in the bookstore, but I just want to highlight a few alternatives:
- Macroeconomics: A European Text. An interesting book worth looking into, but I didn't buy it.
- Macroeconomics. The classic textbook written by Dornbusch/Fisher. It is a product of two ivory tower scholars that did not seem to care one iota about the real economy. This was my original textbook 25 years ago. Honestly I don't thing a book in the 17th edition is going to be a pathbreaker! There are loads of other copy-cat books trying to replicate this one.
- Concise Guide to Macroeconomics: What Managers, Executives, and Students Need to Know is an attempt to make macroeconomics understandable. However, it is just scratches on the surface. I can't see it being useful for anyone really, but it will give you some superficial knowledge.

I will provide an update in a year's time when I have been through the whole book.

A Review on "Toyota: Fifty Years in Motion"

It is of no wonder that a brilliant man such as Mr. Eiji Toyoda could create a brilliant and inspiring narration of his life.
I had borrowed the book from our college library, being curious as to how the Toyota automobile empire was formed. Mr. Toyoda's story goes through his boyhood days at a mill--during the pre-World War II days when Toyota was still a small textile company--up to the mid-80's when Toyota is already one of the biggest carmakers of the world. I especially enjoyed Mr. Toyoda's story on his early days as an ordinary Toyota employee: Toyota was then a very small car company (that had its roots in textiles) and the young Eiji and his colleague-friends had to start from scratch in building cars. Also, the story on the company's struggle to survive in the post-wwII days was remarkable.
I would highly recommend this inspirational book to everyone, especially to those who are students/practicioners in the field of engineering. I would say that Mr. Eiji Toyoda epitomizes many admirable characteristics befitting an ideal engineer: persistent, industrious, dedicated, and loyal, among others.
The millions of people who now appreciate Toyota cars owe it to this great man, who was once a little boy who dreamed great dreams in a small textile mill.

A stoic but poignant look back at their trials and successes

My dad used to manage a cab company, and received this book from a factory visit back when he was ordering 1,000+ Coronas and Crowns a year but he never read it.
I found the history of Toyota fascinating (they started as an automated loom-maker), I enjoyed the clever ways they dealt with the Japanese military to get materials and contracts during WW2. Toyoda's prose is stoic, but surprisingly touching as he recounts relationships among the talents of the founding Toyoda family, and implicit is the remarkable, unquestioning spirit that united them to keep pushing themselves despite years of suffering. An inspiring read.

This is a great programming book with respect to data structures and algorithms. The author have been able to gather all sort of interesting problems from all corners of computer science. If one is able to understand and internalize all the solutions presented in this book, one will, in my mind, become a solid expert, capable of solving any kind of issues that can be found in the field of software development. In writing comment for this book, I don't know what else to write beyond those good words that have been said about the book in the five star category. In that, I just want to add my comments regarding the use of Java and the math nature of the problems. First, even though Java is used to demonstrate the solutions, it's used very succinctly with just enough Java constructs to make the point, making the code snippets small - an attribute that all programmers can appreciate. Secondly, since Java is considered as a natural, neutral language , its actually a good choice to use in expressing problem/solution in data structure and algorithm topics, which the book is all about. The fact the author approach many solutions from a point of view mathematic makes the book more valuable because all algorithm concepts such time complexity, binary search, etc, are based on mathematical reasoning's. --Thomas R. I request to go through the first chapter as it describes when do we (situations) get different complexities like O(logn), O(n^2), O(loglogn), O(nlogn), O(2^n) etc.. Best among the lot

Seriously this is such a good book to read. The code examples are really up to the mark. It is difficult to find this level of detail in most other interview preparation books and I mean even crack the coding. At the same time the book is comprehensive and simple. Especially KMP which is so easily implemented in the book. Hats off to the author. Great job, looking forward to more.

Great Book!

Code samples, diagrams, complexity analysis, and questions! What more can you ask for? Maybe less. I was already familiar with most structures, so I was more-so reading this book as a review. Some parts like up-tree were not clear to me from the book alone. And, something about the writing style reminded me of how 99% of academia's 1,000 page textbooks are written. Once you read a few programming books that are fun (while still being able to focus on the essentials) you start having higher expectations than just covering lots of material.

Most interviews obsess over data structures so you'd certainly be doing yourself a favor by reading this book.

If faced with having only one cookbook, this would be it. I have seen no better reference for finding not only the answers to the simple day-to-day questions, but also, the answers to those wierd questions questions that crop up from time to time.
I believe that this book is the perfect book for the beginning cook with step-by-step instructions for making omeletts, peeling shrimp, chopping onions, etc...
I also believe that this is the perfect book for even the most experienced cooks as it demonstrates complex techniques in very straight-forward, illustrated terms. Topics like making aspics, pastries, cleaning monkfish, piping chocolate decorations...
This is the book I go back to time and time again. Pretty enough to be on the coffee table as long as your living room is close to the kitchen!

Gorgeous, useful, informative -- why oh why did it have to go out of print

I borrowed this book from my public library to see how accurate the rave reviews were. My only disappointment is that I waited until the book went out of print. There's a good reason used copies are selling at around twice the original cover price.

This book really has it all. The photography is both beautiful and informative. Instead of showing just finished products that offer more spectacle than instruction, these photos give you a practical look at what the steps along the way should look like. The text, while sometimes brief, is clear and concise. Some books offer instructions along the lines of "beat until soft peaks form" for even the most complex procedures. One will find almost the same brevity here, but the author manages something of an instructional miracle here. The statements are short, but they offer the Goldilocks touch of giving you enough detail to get it right but not so much info that you can't keep it all in your head.

There's plenty of general info on all manner of ingredients, technique, and basic preparations as well. Did I mention that I am devastated that the publisher has withdrawn it? Let's hope for a new edition. The current asking price for used editions may be a little out of reach for most of us, but if you're looking for a special gift for that cookbook junkie on your list, you will make someone very happy with this one. (To my friends and family, that's not a hint. I swear.)

Interesting and fun

This book is beautifully written and illustrated, and contains lots of fun spells and ideas for creating your own spells. Although I don't take this informatin 100% seriously, there is something to be said for creating a spell for something you want, because it creates positive energy, positive thoughts and "good karma," and that is probably the essence of any sucessful spell or ritual. Most of the items you need for these spells are not expensive, and many are items you probably already have in your household. If you have a good imagination and open mind, read it, try some spells and have fun!

This book is more entertaining than useful. It has nice pictures and includes different spells from different countries (which was neat). But, overall it wasn't really practical.

Puff Pastry

I can think of one function this book might serve well: as table top "puff pastry". Ever had puff pastry? It's full of air with no real substance. This book reminds me of something a pseudo-craft person might use to convince everyone they are a "Witch". (You in the craft know what I'm referring to...those who enter the craft for all the wrong reasons, who want to impress people, and do no real work to gain knowledge) I'm sorry, I hate being negative, but if you are seeking lots of pretty pictures complete with a snazzy little "bow" to tie the book closed-this fills the bill. Kudos to the Graphic Design team, who did the layout, it displays very well. (My college degree is in Graphic Design) If you are seriously seeking spell work, I suggest you try other books. Morgana

ISBN 0590425560 - Children are bound to find these jokes far more hilarious than adults, but many of the jokes are better read than said because the play on words often goes over the heads of younger children.

96 pages with 101 jokes, ranging from bad to really bad - just the sort of jokes little kids will find roll on the floor funny.

Some of the jokes are just too difficult for really young readers to grasp, which I tested on several kids. Still, what doesn't draw blank stares will have them giggling. Your budding comedian will enjoy the book, you'll enjoy knowing s/he's reading... and maybe wishing they'd read to themselves.

About the Author
Glynis Cowell Glynis Cowell is the Director of the Spanish Language Program in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has taught first-year seminars, honors courses, and numerous face-to-face and hybrid Spanish language courses. She also team-teaches a graduate course on the theories and techniques of teaching foreign languages. Dr. Cowell received her M.A. in Spanish Literature and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration in Foreign Language Education, from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

Audrey Heining-Boynton  Audrey Heining-Boynton received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University and her MA from The Ohio State University. Her career spans K-12 through graduate school teaching, most recently as Professor of Education and Spanish at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has won many teaching awards, including the prestigious ACTFL Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) Teacher of the Year Award, and the UNC ACCESS Award for Excellence in Working with LD and ADHD students. Dr. Heining-Boynton is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and also held many important positions, including President of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). She is an appointed two-term Foreign Language Annals Editorial Board member and guest editor.

The book itself is in perfect condition. However, I should've got it from my schools bookstore because I ended up paying more to rent the book and buy the lab access code I needed. But, the book is in excellent condition!
