Listen First! A Strategy for Effective Marketing Research Thru Social Media

Quick Review:

Being a good listener, argues Stephen Rappaport, is an increasingly important skill in the age of effective Internet marketing. This playbook by the Advertising Research Foundation is a detailed (perhaps over detailed) effort to help businesses both small and large learn how to leverage social media as a platform for marketing research. Although quite difficult to read, its value lies in its difference: unlike most social media marketing books, this one is all about listening and research.

I teach Social Media Marketing both online and in San Francisco (you can click on my profile or Google Jason McDonald to find me), and this book is a one-of-a-kind new perspective on social media marketing and reputation management, that I will recommend to my students and colleagues who want to look before they leap into social media marketing!

Detailed Review:

Listen First! Social Media Marketing Research

Marketing ultimately is about selling; marketing is to selling, as strategy is to tactics. So as marketers, we are the eyes and ears of our companies - constantly scanning the environment for opportunities and threats. As Rappaport argues in this book, the new social media landscape provides unprecedented opportunities for us to 'listen in' to our customers - and thereby gain insights into both opportunities and threats.

Whereas previously marketing research was largely about surveys, focus groups, observational methods, and sales data, now we can hear customers as they complain, customers as they praise, customers as they suggest ideas to us (and to each other). Social media venues such as Twitter, Facebook, Yelp and the like are a veritable gold mine of untapped marketing intelligence.

For that brilliant insight alone - I recommend that you buy this book. Heretofore, most social media marketing books have largely been about talking and getting customers to talk about you; this book switches our focus to the logic of listening.

Defining Marketing Objectives

As marketing needs clear objectives, so too does marketing research and so too does listening in to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Rather than provide clear outlines and guides, however, this is where the book falters a bit. It has many, many case studies but all written in small fonts without clear breaks between concepts and best practices. There is a ton of information in the case studies, but it is really up to you (the reader) to tease it out. It's unfortunate that the book's editor didn't know where the BOLD key was in Microsoft word! That would have made the book a lot easier to read, and to get the correct take-aways.

I especially liked the distinctions made. For example, Rappaport distinguishes between Brand Backyards like one's own Twitter account, blog, or forum and consumer backyards such as the Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter accounts of others. Too often, corporations have tried to control the social media marketing dialogue rather than embrace the necessary chaos of this new marketing world order.

The case study on Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow who provide bacon-flavored products is especially informative. Rather than getting stuck down with academic research agendas and objectives, the two basically trolled user forums and blogs to realize the obvious: everything tastes better with bacon! From this social media marketing insight a bacon powerhouse was born.

At the level of theory, Rapaport reminds us, an overly academic researcher might have objected to the lack of statistical rigor in the I-love-bacon listening strategy. But, he reminds, us the results (sales!) speak for themselves.

So first define your objectives, and then listen. Or better yet: define your marketing objectives as you listen, and don't get too hung up on social science rigor!

Reputation Management and Social Media Marketing Listening

Among the new social media marketing buzz words is reputation management. Rapaport only touches on this subject, but reminds us that listening is a critical element of an effective reputation management strategy. You have to know your reputation, after all, before you can manage it!

He concludes the book with a list of online resources, that I will peruse and investigate during my summer break. I track hundreds of free social media tools, and I am eager to investigate his picks. My hat goes off to him for having a list of resources as many otherwise great books, leave us hanging. In this age of the Internet, no book is complete without a list of links and Rapaport obliges. A great source book for online social listening resources and possibilities

I like this book but it wasn't easy to read - though I read it entirely on my iPad Kindle and made a lot of highlights and notes, as well as a book review on my blog [...]

What I like about this book is the ARF's extensive library of Case Studies and ARF best practices on online social listening which are shared in the book, esp if someone has the time and patience to read through it.

On the other hand, I felt as if, by chapter 9-10, had been so blitzed out with case study and caste study after case study that Steve said was an example of this or that initiative, I began not to care any more - it's almost has if what Rappaport created was a college textbook on online listening - something out of sociology or chemistry - that takes a lot of work to read though and think about.

Nothing wrong with that ... but I suspect most people won't have the attention span to fully get this book - however they are the poorer for it, by far, when they don't (get it).

A coffee table book that makes you forget the coffee.

One way to judge my opinion of this book is for me to remember that I have read it and reread it many times. It is a fascinating look into the working spaces of some of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. The photos are usually Liberman's own and while good, they are not usually "fine art". However, they do provide glimpses into places few have been, and that now no longer exist. Do I recommend it? Try borrowing mine--sorry! A companion piece is another book entitled, "Latin American Artists in Their Studios". The photos were taken by professionals and they look it. Both books are worthy of study for serious art enthusiasts. For more info on Liberman, read "Alex", the story of his life.

MUST, I REALLY Must salute this perhaps dated, but CLASSIC of a book about artists..

Growing up in an ignorant town in Alabama

Artistically inclined , and with little inspiration

THIS was a delicious eye-opener

Chock full of insightful interviews

and photos of these artists in their studios, lovingly documented, down to their palettes.

This is a soul ful, delectable book about artists .

The Artist in his Studio

This is a wonderful book full of extraordinary photos of artists and Lieberman's accounts of his meetings with them. They almost leap out of the pages at you because he brings them so much alive, both in his anecdotes and his pictures. I don't know any other book which makes me feel that I know these talented people, as if I had just met them, and I keep going back into the book to meet them again. A really good present for any artist or art lover.

Timeless manipulations

Book in great condition. Very insightful comments and explanations of sleights and audience psychology. Less comprehensive but with far more depth more then Encyclopedia of Closeup Magic. The useful goodies are here. The advice contained is excellent. Opinionated but interesting and very informative. Add dimension to your sleight of hand--get this book.

About the Author
John Mutumba Bilay studied computer engineering and finance at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. After completing his studies, he started his career as a software engineer. He currently works as a senior software engineer and enterprise integration consultant at Rojo Consultancy B.V. in the Netherlands. With more than 12 years of international experience in information technology, he has primarily focused on integration technologies for the last nine years. His SAP specialities include SAP integration- and process-related technologies, including SAP Process Orchestration and SAP HANA Cloud Integration. In addition to his daily integration work, he provides integration-related trainings for SAP and for Rojo Consultancy B.V.

Dr. Peter Gutsche studied physics at Heidelberg University, Ruperto Carola. After completing his Ph.D, he joined SAP in 1999. As an information developer, Peter was involved in many knowledge management projects related to SAP's interface and integration technologies. Today, as a knowledge architect, he is responsible for the product documentation of SAP HANA Cloud Integration and works on documentation concepts for Cloud software. Peter is a seasoned technical author with wide-ranging experience in the fields of SAP Process Integration and SAP HANA Cloud Integration.

Prof. Dr. Volker Stiehl studied computer science at the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. After 12 years as a developer and consultant at Siemens, he joined SAP in 2004. As chief product expert, Volker was responsible for the success of the products SAP Process Orchestration, SAP Process Integration, and SAP HANA Cloud Integration. He left SAP in 2016 and accepted a position as a professor at the Ingolstadt Technical University of Applied Sciences where he is currently teaching business informatics. In September 2011, Volker received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Technology Darmstadt. His thesis was on the systematic design and implementation of applications using BPMN. Volker is also the author of "Process-Driven Applications with BPMN" and a regular speaker at various national and international conferences.

Punches through anxiety about learning to draw

I'm fourty-something and decided I wanted to learn to draw. Picking up that pencil and looking at a blank piece of paper is intimidating. This book helped me break through some anxiety and me doodling in no time. After a week with the book I ended up at an art supply store buying pencils in other colors and different diameter art pens. I don't know how long this would have taken me without this book. Adult-ed drawing classes are next!

I found this book at a used book store and had so much fun with it. The pen and pencils that came with it were of good quality and the easy way it presents playing with drawing was great fun. I decided to send the book to my 14 year old granddaughter because she says she can't draw. Anyone can draw using this book. I would choose this book for anyone older than 4 or 5 years old. Very fun.

I love this book

I'm a former commercial artist & I think this book is great. I really wish my mom had given me a book like this when I was a kid. It's fun & very inspirational for a budding artist. Gives easy step by steps and has a way of making whatever the kids draw look great. Unfortunately my kids don't draw, not even a little bit (I've thrown away stacks of coloring books with only connect the dots done, in pencil). I was hoping this would inspire them, but I don't think it's possible.

Well presented and clearly written explanation of specialfx

Thomas Smith was general manager of Industrial Light and Magic a year before he came to write this impressive book. The book is centred around the film special effects creations of ILM between 1975 and 1985. This includes the then "Star Wars" trilogy, two Indiana Jones movies and other lesser known projects. For the Star Wars fan theres plenty to learn about one of your favourite movies. This book is lavishly illustrated with full colour photos including triple page or gatefold images. The focus though is on how the effects are done and who did them at ILM. From the art work in developing concepts of storylines, through modelling, creature creation, the actual filming methods and matte image creation to the finishing touches of animation and optical compositing this book gives a gradual demonstration of the work of a special effects company. For someone with no knowledge what so ever of special effects this is a good introduction and to those involved it must be fascinating as well. As Thomas Smith points out, while film fans still love the movies from this era (1975-85), movie goers constantly seek new visions on screen. The digital era has brought movies like Toy Story etc but these were just figments of imagination at the writing of this book so its worth noting Thomas Smith's far-sightedness in the final chapter on digitized movies. The format of the book is to take each department of the special effects process and show what it does and where its part comes in the crafting of a movie. In each chapter there are short biographies of the leading people in each area of effects, this is a nice touch as it can serve as guide for those interested in getting involved. Its worth noting, many of those profiled have a long interest in their specialty going back to their youth and through the various twists and turns of working in an industry knew of other members of the ILM company before actually joining this now esteemed organisation. Thomas Smith by no means is setting out to sell ILM's considerable expertise though he tells the story of a company making dreams into reality, itself moving from an idea to a serious business proposition. (As a final note another book on movies of this period Paul Sammons "Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner" contains insightful descriptions about the crafting of a movie not least its special effects.)

Behind the Scenes, Behind the Magic

No one would ever have guessed that when Industrial Light & Magic opened its doors in Maren County that day way back in 1975 that they would produce the standard by which other special effects and other effects houses would be judged. ILM has formed the cornerstone of LucasFilm Ltd. a company that has spawned more spin-offs such as THX Sound, Skywalker Sound, all held neatly under the Lucas Digitial banner. Back in the days of Star Wars it was mostly using what was already known, and inventing everything else. ILM has been at the forefront ever since, from the early days of motion control cameras controlled by Apple computers the latest CG marvel like Galaxy Quest, Phantom Menace or Mission to Mars.
The Art of Special Effects deals more with the older films-those before 1986, illustrating a time when computers were not so large a part in the film-making process. It gives the reader a great look at the sheer amount of detail that went into the models, the props, costumes from Star Wars to Explorers, from Raiders of the Lost Ark to the some of the Star Trek films, ILM constantly and consistently proven to innovative. The book as a whole is on a level lower than, say, Cinefex magazine, assuming that the reader doesn't know how blue screening and rotoscoping works or how miniatures are lensed. It is light reading without getting itself bogged down in too much technicality, for those who want that, read Cinefex.
It also strikes me that this book is also best at presenting a dying era. A time when model makers kit bashed hundreds of plastic models just to build a Super Star Destroyer - few companies bother with that any more when everything can be rendered on a Silicon Graphics box and Maya and Soft Image software. Such films as Star Trek: Insurrection used few practical models and a completely CG Enterprise-E. The time of the supremely detailed, hand crafted model or set may be at an end, and I think the industry will be sadder for it. Partially because when I read Cinefex, a lot of what I see is the same-different movie, different space ship, but they're all rendered the same way and most use the same software, with only minor modifications or original code going into it to get a certain look or solve a certain problem.
I suspect the Digital Realm of the movies, while producing better special effects, lacks the mystique of knowing that several people labored for months to build that model. That instead it was modeled by a few people over a period of a week. (Though it should be noted that a lot of films, including the Phantom Menace, used practical models). I suspect their days are number.

About the Author

Dr. Patrick Hagerman, EdD, FNSCA, CSCS, NSCACPT, has established himself as an authority on the topic of strength training through his experience as a professor of exercise and sports science, a coach, and a personal trainer. Starting as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach, Hagerman went on to coach for USA Weightlifting and USA Triathlon and to serve on the USA Triathlon Coaching Commission.

Hagerman is a fellow of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), a past member of its board of directors, and a recipient of the 2002 NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year award.

Hagerman has written six other books on fitness and strength training, contributed to numerous textbooks, and published more than 30 articles on strength and conditioning. For over 25 years he has competed in triathlon, cycling, windsurfing, and adventure racing.

Finally! Something to the point and make sense - at least to me

I have to be honest and say that when I first got the book I went immediately to the "sample training program" and was not thrilled. It was meaningless, I thought, but I took a deep breath and started to read from page one. The only fluff or skip over pages were from Chapter 4 (tools and equipment), but otherwise, this was a quick read and the build up to the "plan/program" made a lot of sense.

Let me explain. I am a marathoner and long distance bike rider, but my swimming is weak. As I read this book and allowed the author to build to the training plan I realized this was exactly what I was looking for. I didn't need cookie cutter. I didn't need a pro's example of his/her weight training. I needed to build a plan to fit my specific needs. My needs are to build endurance and strength in my upper body for the swim and improve my leg power. To accomplish each requires different exercises, sets, reps, weights and resting time. All of which are explained very well in the book.

The exercise section is broken down into all three sports and then into exercises for upper and lower body. There are cross overs of course, but when I used the guideline on how to build my plan towards my needs and selected the exercises that would increase the power, endurance or size of those specific muscles based upon "My" goals the plan came together very easily.

While this is not my first tri-sport training book I am definitely glad I bought it. Are you look for endurance, power/strength or muscle size? Are you looking for the same for all three sports? Or are you looking for endurance for one and strength for another?

If so, buy it!

Good big picture overview at designing a season long triathlon ...

Good big picture overview at designing a season long triathlon strength training program. Chapter on strength exercises to target weak areas is very strong (example: do single leg exercises using a heavier weight on weaker leg if one leg pulls less strongly than the other on the bike). I wish it had included more sample training programs, but similar to The Well Built-Built Triathlete the few templates are meant to be a starting point to designing your own program. In order to get the most from the book you have to be engaged in developing a routine that meets your goals and needs.

Why and how of functional strength training - with sharp focus on triathlete needs

I need all the help I can get as a Triathlete. A year ago I added in some gym time for functional strength training and have ben guided by gym instructors and my coach with routines. However, leading up to my last race I think I overtrained, including hitting the gym a bit hard or too often. So my coach and I have recalibrated my training plans, and I am eager to be more strategic and focused in how and when I spend gym time. So I got a copy of Strength Training for Triathletes to educate myself and help form a plan.
Patrick Hagerman builds the case for functional strength training to complement endurance exercise. He explains how improvement in any training comes from overload, and discusses how best to manage that and how to increase loads with specific triathlon goals in mind. This applies to different exercises for different muscles a triathlete draws on. Half the book has whole pages devoted to each exercise, explaining and illustrating how to do them safely. It helped me draft a list of exercises for some of my weaknesses, especially to help me run off the bike better. Thus in the gym on Mondays and Wednesdays (and maybe Fridays too if I don’t go to Yoga), I’ll plan on Cardio skipping in a circuit with box jumps and burpees, then deadlift, step ups, barbell row, split squats shoulder dips, hip exercise, calf raises and leg press, followed by roller and swimming stretches. (And my coach has added Paloff press, alternating dumbell chest press, double and single leg glute bridges and single leg bicep curls for core as much as biceps) And at home on Tuesdays and Thursdays I may do a lighter core and stretching-focused routine of seated dips, lateral lunge, rotation core exercise, plank, slam dunk, push ups, tubing strokes, and rolling and feet and calf stretching.
A good plan also applies to different emphases for different distances. For my training for Ironman distance, for example, I read it is most important to:
• Warm up and cool down well, and stay warm while doing exercises (no extended rests)
• Recover well between workouts, not repeating the same exercise the following day
• Develop a plan of periodized training, starting with a solid base of muscular endurance (with 2-3 sets of 12-20 reps and 30 seconds rest), but muscle size/hypertrophy (with 3-5 sets of 6-12 reps and 30-90s rest) and strength (with 3-6 sets of 1-6 reps with 90-180s rest) are important too. The different periods would increase weights for each focus, starting with an extended period of muscular endurance focus, leading to a focus on peak strength in the 2-4 weeks before a main event
• split strength training so that it does not compromise endurance training (for example, for me this might mean gym training that focuses on legs and stretching on swim days)
• decrease in volume but maintain intensity in the fortnight before an event, and rest from the gym for 3 full days.
I’ll talk to my coach and experiment with that anyway, but the book has educated me much more and given me a clear structure on why and how and how often to apply a really well focused functional strength plan. Thanks Patrick Hagerman for sharing your expertise in this way – this is a book for any triathletes and coaches eager to take strength training seriously (but not too seriously as it needs perspective to avoid overdoing it).
