It could be true! That's the enthusiasm that author and scholar-mystic Graham Hancock counts on--in himself and in his readers--as he lays down his theories of an ancient (Atlantean, perhaps?) civilization that disseminated a sophisticated religion of ground-sky dualism and a "science" of immortality. Hancock's previous work, including the popular and controversial Fingerprints of the Gods, has drawn criticism for its leaps of faith and allegedly pseudoscientific conclusions, but Heaven's Mirror proves at least a little more substantial. His chief thesis is that numerous ancient sites and monuments--the pyramids of Mexico and Egypt, the ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the monuments of Yonaguni in the Pacific, and the megaliths of Peru and Bolivia--are situated in such a way, geodetically, that they point towards some separate and uniform influence, some lost civilization or "invisible college" of astronomer-priests. And that civilization, as evidenced in the mathematics and architecture of the sites, points towards some gnosis, or body of knowledge, that would allow humanity to transcend the trap of mortality, a worldview in which the knowledge-giving serpent of Eden is not a villain but a hero.

At the worst this book will make you think...

At the best you will be transported back 10,500 years ago to a super-civilization that spanned the length of the globe making monuments to their gods and exploring the heavens and the seas!!
This book will produce a physical visceral reaction for EVERY reader who dares to pick up this book. Some will dismiss it as total and utter junk, other will believe every word of it. Most of us will be intrigued, enjoy the excellent writing and spectacular pictures, but be left unsure. I know at the end of this book I WANTED TO BELIEVE MORE THAN I WANTED TO BELIEVE ANYTHING ABOUT HISTORY!!
I want to believe that the human race could do all of these fantastic things in such an organized, precise way thousands of years before the great civilizations of the Romans and the Greeks. I really do! I want to believe that we are all tied together in a way that united us and makes up proud of the human race and its dizzying array of achievements. I want to believe that our ancestors tamed the seas, knew advanced calculus, astronomy, physics, building techniques, etc. I think this book gives great hope for mankind and demonstrates how special human beings are.
That being said, do I agree with all Hancock's theory? Answer: I don't know, but it made one hell of a read, and for that I thank him.
Trust me when I tell you that this book is worth reading, worth thinking about and important in a small way (possibly an extremely large way) about the history of humanity. It is well written, filled with exceptional photographs, explains complicated ideas with ease, and you will learn something. Even if it as simple as the idea of celestial procession.

Mirror, Mirror on the Floor...

"Heavens Mirror" is a lush book of alternative ancient history from Graham Hancock, author of "Fingerprints of the Gods", a book I really enjoyed. Though I definitely did find it interesting, it left me with a bad taste in the mouth after I read it, if that makes sense.

Graham Hancock believes that long ago there was a civilization as sophisticated and thoughtful as ours, wiped out by the last ice age (around 10,500 BC), and whose influence can be seen in cultures round the world. He put forward this theory in his book "Fingerprints of the Gods", a well presented, heavily researched book. Graham is still writing about this lost culture, but rather than focusing on it's apparent influence like he did in "Fingerprints", he focuses on their beliefs and rituals. He finds a lot of things in common between certain cultures of the world. There's the idea of a "navel of the world", the idea of an afterlife world in the sky, references to the procession of the equinoxes, temples and structures in the form of certain constellations. Jumping from continent to continent, he tries to piece things together, hopefully coming to a conclusion.

First of all, I must say, this is a well presented book, just like "Fingerprints of the Gods". Hancock's wife, Santha Faiia, provided the photography, and there are some fantastic shots of famous ancient monuments, taken from angles and distances I have never seen before. It's almost as if you are there. They were a treat to look at, and she rightfully gets co-authorship of the book because of it. There are diagrams, which really, REALLY helped with the astronomical and mathematical elements. The content of the book, the studies on ancient beliefs, was also fascinating to read.

That's not to say this is a book without flaws. Graham doesn't seem to know who he is writing to here, newcomers to his books or old regulars. Sometimes he assumes we've read his books, and other times he repeats himself. He repeats himself in a few ways, actually. He'll make the same point a couple of times, which I found a little bit annoying, and it caused my eyes to wander from the page more than once. He seems a little more intense in his writing that he does in "Fingerprints of the Gods" too, and I can't say it's the most inviting feel to have. Plus, there are hardly as many references as his last books.

I felt a little bit uneasy reading this book, and I couldn't quite put a finger on why. It started when I noticed Graham Hancock was using the word "initiate" frequently when talking about the ancient learned people. The last alternative history book I read that used the word "initiate" frequently descended into obsessive nonsense very quickly, and was almost impossible to comprehend (let alone believe or consider). "What was Graham getting at here?" I thought. I got a little more uncomfortable when he started throwing the the words "gnosis" and "gnostic", and started mixing beliefs together.

Graham had been making all these links, pointing out these common factors, but not really stopping to explain why. The conclusion, when he finally got to it, came as something as a shock, though I felt it coming. He claims to believe that the ancient people were onto something in their rituals. He quotes gnostic gospels of the Christian era as if they were not only correct, but influenced by this ten thousand year old culture he claims existed. Then, came this sentence, wedged within the final paragraph:

"Modern religions, like modern science, have let us down, offering us no nourishment or guidance. Perhaps our only hope ... [is] when certain ideas come to life again, and we should not deprive our grandchildren of a last chance at the heritage of the highest are farthest-off times"

That says it all about why I felt so uneasy about the book, I think. Rejecting basically everyone in favor of his mish mash of ancient beliefs. It's one thing to say that civilizations have things in common, it's quite another to say that they have the answers for the future, if you know what I mean.

It was a very interesting look at ancient cultures, I do agree, very well presented with some fantastic pictures. That's the reason I give it four stars. Graham Hancock's conclusions, however, are rather worrying. I hope he doesn't get too sucked into these kind of theories.

Myths and Monuments as Signs

There are essentially five types of arguments for one or more intelligent ET civilizations having visited and exploited earth and influencing (if not helping "create") humanity and continuing to do so. The first is the logico-statistical, which is essentially that in a universe as large and as old as ours, anything that can happen has happened, does happen, and will happen in a mulititude of spacetime locales. The second is the mythological: Our sacred histories are full of accounts of the gods, sons of god, angels, demons, faeries, etc. coming to earth from the sky, out of the sea, etc. The third is the testimony of all those who have seen flying saucers and met various intelligent non-humans (some of whom allegedly advise that, yes indeed, they have been coming and going for milleinia). The fourth are the megalithic monuments found all over the world whose origins, engineering, and construction are inexplicably sophisticated and, in some cases, beyond any known human technology, past or present. The fifth is the aesthetic argument, to the effect that in our time, science fiction is prophecy, from Jules Verne and H.G. Wells to Gene Roddenberry, and within such genre, intelligent non-human civilizations are fundamental. The fact that current human science and technology (whether or not inadvertently a/o secretly assisted by ETI), much of it classified, has either accomplished or is now on the verge of such things as "anti-gravity" field propulsion vehicles (i.e. "flying saucers"), particle beam weaponry, and bio-engineering transgenic species and increased longevity, makes it all the more plausible (if not demonstrable) that the sons of adam may simply be tracing the same paths pursued by other, more mature civilizations. Hancock's explorations of the megalithic monuments and myths and the questions he raises are truly worth pondering. However, his hypotheses about a secret society of astronomer-priests which many find too fanciful and preposterous, are, in my opinion, to the contrary, insufficiently imaginitive if one merely accepts the conclusion of the first argument above. It is not crop circles (which humans can make with computer controlled directed energy devices such as masers) that are the "signs" we should attend to; they are the myths and megalithic monuments. The "gods" have left far more than their fingerprints; they have left all sorts of messages for the sons of adam. (Among these messages, for example, are that man has both a body and soul, his body is subject to death, and his soul must reckon with divine judgment concerning the good and evil he does. Eternal life as enjoyed by those who live in the heavenly realms is an ancient quest for the sons of adam.) Hancock and his talented wife are to be commended for calling our attention to some of these myths and monuments so expertly and helping us better see how truly marvelous they are. Wonder if they had any help from on high?

Excellent book for micro economics, from intermediate to advanced level, allows for excellent undersatnding although as some point out in other reviews it can be at times complicated, but so is the nature of the subject it explains. In use with an additional text covering the more theoretical approach it is key to understanding the analytical part of microeconomics. A parallel could be established to some extent to Alpha Chiang's Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics.

Excellent Book

This is an excellent book overall. The first chapter is an overview of basic MR, the second chapter vascular MR, and the third chapter cardiac MR. The author has a very clear thought process which makes MR easily understandable, in contrast to other MR books which get bogged down in minutiae and heavy physics. Dr. Lee's efficient layman style prose also helps make learning MR more intuitive. I highly recommend this book. The first chapter is excellent for MR in general, even if cardiac imaging is not your main interest.

This book is outstanding. Appropriately detailed, very clearly written and with excellent (and copious) figures. As an MRI physics researcher who moved into the field slightly late in his career I continually find this very useful.

Great intro to MR physics, K-space, and basic cardiac techniques

Was looking for a good book for fellows interesting in MRI. I think this is the best I've found. Though people without strong math and vector addition backgrounds may still get lost a bit, it does a pretty good job of bringing those without that background up to speed quickly.

It is not really a manual on how to start imaging, but for those looking to have a basic understanding of how the images are generated and potential pitfalls in getting good images, this is very good. Despite being a few years old, it still touches on most of the important topics, especially for a beginner.

Why this book is so good

This book is justly famous.

I have a shelf full of cookbooks (literally) and like this one best for three reasons. First, the authors really did write their recipes with ordinary US supermarkets in mind. It is fairly easy to get the ingredients for any of the dishes. The authors also describe things very clearly so you can make something new and not be afraid.

But the very best thing of all is that the authors tell you _why_. Why a particular method works, why it's necessary, why some substitution won't work, and so on. They do this far better than any other book I've seen. This one is worth the cost.

It will take more than this, but.....

Anyone who reads learns quickly not to judge a book by its cover. And in this case it is doubly important because neither the look nor the title serve as any indication of what is inside this classic tome. It could be argued that it is impossible to "master the art..." by reading a book, and I would agree. What is important, however, is realizing the breadth of understanding that can be gained by a careful reading of this work. It is an important work not only because of its timeliness when it was in its infancy and first published, but because it shares a timeless look into the history of the culinary arts as seen through eyes shaded by French gastronomy.

I watched the movie "Julie & Julia", the theme from which was derived from the over five hundred recipes in this two volume set, and I also remember some of the episodes from Julia Childs early television career. I truly enjoyed the movie, but the early Julia Child television stuff was not something that modern television producers would consider a first class effort. I think, perhaps, that we become somewhat jaded by modern television and the almost universal accessibility of convenience based communication.

Thankfully, bound printed journals such as this do not suffer the decay that is so prevalent in today's digital world. You can be proud of the wonderful books that you own. You can read and re-read them and enjoy them for many years, then pass them down to others who are free to enjoy them too. "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" belongs to that very select group that I own...and will never part with. This set joins many others, but is one of a few that I really enjoy re-reading. Every time I take them from their place on the shelf and page through them, I learn something new. Gaining knowledge is in itself a good thing.

No, you will not become a master French chef by reading these volumes. You will, however, gain a terrific insight into French gastronomy and pick up some great tips. All of which will serve you well as you strive to prepare that special dish or try to understand the reasoning behind "mother sauces" and how it affects the homemade mac & cheese dish that your child relishes.

There are many reasons to read and own "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", but staying current with modern French cuisine is not one of them. If however, you love 'continental' cuisine or maybe just have an insatiable desire to better understand the history of gastronomy that pre-dates modern canned and packaged goodness, then this two volume set will serve you well. And, who knows, you too may be enticed to travel the road of Julie and prepare all five hundred plus recipes firmly embedded in "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and in the history of food world wide.

A WONDERFUL book!

If anyone on earth ever felt hesitant and unequipped to tackle the recipes in this masterpiece by Julia Child and her colleagues, they don't need to give it another thought. I was nervous and excited about the pending arrival of this book when I ordered it, and eagerly went through it when it finally arrived.....surprised and overjoyed at what I read.

While the recipes require your full attention, they are not as daunting as they may sound. In fact, I immediately saw a small collection of scattered recipes that I, a working mother, could easily and gleefully make on a day off or quiet weekend. The recipes are accompanied by a list of equipment you will need to make the recipe and very simple, thorough step-by-step instructions.

It does take a commitment of time to make many of the recipes, but you probably wouldn't have been looking for this book if you weren't willing to make the time to cook special choices from the book. You would have looked instead at the books featuring ten minute meals featuring minute rice and canned tuna.

I have to admit....I wouldn't utilize these recipes several times a week, or even a few times a week.But the book is a treasure and a gem for anyone looking for something special to make for a special day, a special gathering, or a special person.

The book also explains cooking terms, cooking equipment, and some things as simple as how to make a great omelet or poached egg. It would make a great gift for those rare and admirable souls that actually look forward to real cooking.

I recommend stepping out with confidence and joy and getting this book......because it is a great exercise in challenging yourself and exploring the wonderful and new! You won't fail. It's designed to help you succeed.

Not only will you triumph....but somewhere, silently, Julia will be cheering you on.

Reading while on the throne. . . and the thoughts that come

Awesome book. Every household with a bathroom where there's a reader who visits... Well, this is a perfect book to add to your decor, an item to be used when paying a visit to the WC. A friend of mine loaned this book to me back when it was first published. Julie L. Horan was a flight attendant who flew all over the world. Of course, where ever she went, there were toilets there to use. Thus, began her curiosity. Book is full of interesting tidbits about this place and that, times being the ancient and the modern.

"Porcelain God" has lots of minute details that you'll really want to know about one of our most frequently used tools. Without the toilet in the house, our backyards would be quite unsightly and unsanitary. In fact, I've always wondered how one can be allowed to build something without a toilet, a sewer and a way for it to be composted... Well, thus, we have nuclear power plants, but then that's another whole tale, did you get it? No storage for the waste... Back to the "The Porcelain God: A Social History of the Toilet".

Believe me, if you've never been curious about how we got toilets, then you're not really a deep thinker. This book has all the answers to your questions, presented in an entertaining fashion and told by a woman who just couldn't seem to get enough information about her subject.

Here's one thing that book did to me: It made me begin to shut the lid on my toilet after every use. I tell people it's because in an earthquake I don't want all the items above the toilet on a shelf to fall into the tank, actually true. If things come back to life after the quake, the last thing you want to be doing is shopping for a toilet with everyone else. No, it's the info she gives you about how high the water rises up above and how long that continues after you've flushed the toilet. Not something I'd ever pondered before her book.

The two plus two equals four here is: If you allow the water spray from the toilet to come back into your room, then how sanitary is the air in your bathroom? Hmmm... something to ponder... deeply... Yes, I'll recommend this book to every one. In fact, I just purchased a copy of this book for a family member who I know is about to do some travels. Thought it would be a good time to begin learning about the toilets of the world... and what the water spray really means to them.

I meant to mention that this book is one of my favorite history books. The writer has a clear style with humorous overtones ~ after all, look at her chosen subject. She takes you all over the world and all through the ages in an entertaining fashion. So, if you're looking for a good read with real facts presented in an easy to read format, here's a book you should not pass up.

I'm DVM, and I highly recommend this book. It is clear, brings good concepts and specific information, very usefull and up to date. It has good information for DVM, students and techs. Really good source of information about Dairy production.

About the Author

Steven Bach has been associated with the motion pictures Sleuth, The Parallax View, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and The French Lieutenant's Woman, in addition to Heaven's Gate. He also taught film at Columbia University. Bach passed away in March 2009.

Schadenfreude in spades

After seeing a reissued "director's cut" version of "Heaven's Gate," the movie so expensive to produce and so poorly received by the critics in 1980 that it destroyed Michael Cimino's reputation as a director and led to the demise of United Artists, I sought out this book by one of the United Artist producers involved in the project (and who also lost his job in the aftermath). It's a fascinating story. How could Ciminio--who had just come from making "The Deer Hunter," which netted him Academy Awards for best picture and best director--have created such a mess? Vastly exceeding its budget, "Heaven's Gate" was visually spectacular but had a poor sound track and a story that verged on incoherence at times. Why did United Artists let him do it? This book tells the story in great detail and Steven Bach was a fine writer. The most interesting parts, however--the Cimino story--gets lost from time to time in Bach's efforts to paint a comprehensive picture of United Artist's glorious history (it was founded by Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks) as well as describing the Hollywood system of movie making in general. I found myself skipping parts. But, that being said, it's a great read and a fabulous story of hubris and Hollywood finances.

When Art Meets Business!!

Must read for anyone interested in film making and the business of distribution. While art is important to some this still is a business that needs "product." Self indulgence too often results in a product that no one wants except the i individual who indulged himself. This is an inside baseball book that the late Mr. Bach wrote with honesty and passion.

A Steven King story come to life.

Not so much that it is horror (people aren't dying or being stalked by monsters), but in how the process of making the film started out wrong, and continues to get more and more wrong at every step. As a history, you know how it'll end, but it's still almost depressing how at each step the execs make wrong decision after wrong decision, throwing good money after bad. If Bach is to be believed, he and his confederates were so desperate for a defining hit that they simply talked themselves into a disaster, didn't have the guts or experience or self-preservation instinct to cut their losses and then the piper was paid.

Cimino comes across as someone who simply needed to be told no on occasion and forced to work within limits, and the early rejection of his Fountainhead idea shows that that was probably possible. But once the train started rolling, nothing save a miraculous Citizen Kane level result would have saved the day, and Heaven's Gate was no miracle. You could tell by the way they caved in to his demand to cast Huppert that the only real option had become ditching the project altogether, but that's not how ego works. Some say it's a masterpiece (though with the sound issues, absurd length and lack of narrative dynamism that's pretty hard to support), but it didn't need to be a masterpiece; it needed to be a hit. It wasn't and it destroyed Cimino's career and UA along with it. We are left to wonder whether a fictional account of a war that never happened was worth it.
