As I've coached software engineering teams on testing practices I've found that often the obstacle is not whether they believe they should test or whether they understand the concepts of testing, but the concrete understanding of what testable code looks like and knowledge of the implementation patterns of how to bring code under test.

Looking around, I realized that no one had written squarely on this topic. There are lots of great books by the likes of Bob Martin, Michael Feathers, Lasse Koskela, Kent Beck, Steve Freeman and Nat Pryce, Martin Fowler, Joshua Kierevsky, and others that address approaches to testing, the importance of testing, and so forth. In the process they show techniques for bringing code under test, but it's usually secondary to the points being made. The only exception to this is Michael Feathers' "Working Effectively with Legacy Code" but it has a very specific focus that necessarily limits the techniques discussed.

Many of the examples of the book are in Java, although overall I use a dozen or so languages for examples. This is largely an artifact of the language I was most immersed in when the seed of the idea was planted. There are many examples from JavaScript, including one of the worked example chapters. With a few exceptions that I tried to point out, almost all of the techniques can be applied in most languages with only a little adaptation, so if Java and JavaScript are not your primary tools, you should still be able to leverage the techniques.

Stephen Vance has been a professional software developer, consultant, manager, mentor, and instructor since 1992. He has practiced and taught code-level, automated testing techniques since 1997. He has worked across a broad range of industries for companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 100 corporations. He has spoken at software conferences throughout the United States and Europe. Stephen lives with his wife near Boston, Massachusetts.

Very thorough with practical examples

The first part of the book lays a foundation of why to test, approaches, and how to handle different situations. The book touches a lot of scenarios I would have not thought of before hand like parallelism, factories, events, and even error testing (before this book I thought error handling was considered testing). He then polishes it off with a couple real world projects and applying the principles covered to bring them under test.

The examples are Java, Javascript, and Perl. I know very little Java and Perl but the examples were clear enough that knowing basic programming is enough (I'm a php, coldfusion, javascript developer). The book proves that testing is as much about the approach and theory as the language specifics.

I give it 5 stars because of the book's clarity, the simple and practical examples, it applies the principles into real world code, and the book is reasonable length that you don't give up on it.

Quality is baked into the code from the start

Having worked as a software developer, a QA manager, and an Agile development manager, I've often heard debate about whether or not developers should test their own code. Though certainly developers are expected to unit test, even in Agile environments, I've often seen the separation of roles between developers and testers. I've always been of the opinion that developers were quite capable of testing, and in fact, would ideally create automated tests to be run with each build and deployment.

One thing I really like about this book is that it teaches how to bake quality principals into the code and does not distinguish between a developer and a tester, but teaches these skills to the Agile team member. That being said, the reader should have coding skills in order to gain the benefits of the advice, and the book is more pertinent for the developer who wants to learn testing skills rather than the manual tester who wants to learn test automation skills.

The author does a great job of providing examples and patterns that will help the seasoned coder to thoroughly test and create a high quality application. In our modern world of continuous delivery, we must evaluate for test coverage and automation as a priority. This book will help the software development team learn the necessary skills to guarantee quality from the start.

not really sure who this book is intended for

I am not really sure who this book is intended for.... It assumes you know the basics of testing so it's not for beginners, but there is very little information here for seasoned coders, though actually specifying the principles can be moderately helpful. From the description of the book I was really hoping for coverage of the full test "stack", unit, integration, performance etc, more specifically what domains you should cover and how you should create your testing strategies. Instead we get a bunch of useful, though pretty well-known unit test patterns. I guess if you have just started out writing tests and know the basics of the frameworks but not much else this book could be useful, but everyone else is probably better off with a more thorough treatment of the subject.

About the Author
Sue Patterson, wife and mom to three grown homeschoolers, is as busy as an "empty nester" as she was while the kids were all still home! Her kids are off on adventures of their own now, weaving in and out of her life. Sue and her family began homeschooling in 1996 when they found the local public schools simply weren't good enough. They participated in support groups at the local, state and national level, as her husband's military career moved them from state to state. Now, nearly two decades later, she feels she's seen enough and knows enough to help people understand more about how to homeschool successfully.

Sue is also a life coach and mentor helping families who are leaving the school system navigate their new homeschooling world. Through her experience, wisdom, and unique tips for each family's needs, parents gain confidence, knowledge, and find the reassurance they need to be successful. What a great resource/eye-opener/brainstorm starter for all the possible experiences (& more!) my unschooled teens can one day look forward to. This book covers all the questions and makes a nice guide for teens forging their own homeschooled path. And for parents on the verge wondering what it can be like. Or even for those already homeschooling teens- it's really great to see the varied journeys and glimpse the many different bits of these kids' lives. Highly recommend for your bookshelf!

A very helpful and well-designed book. I'm currently using it to prepare for October's New SAT. When I first bought the book, it was written that there were 6 tests, but arrived the book with 4 tests, so I was a little disappointed. Fortunately, I ordered one more book that offered additional tests (it's called Kallis' SAT Pattern just in case).

Forster's ( William Makepeace Thackeray , etc.) provocative biography offers arresting new information on Elizabeth Barrett Browning, her family and associates. The author gleaned a wealth of material from the voluminous Philip Kelley collection of Barrett/Browning letters, several predating her subject's birth in 1806. "Ba" was the first of 11 surviving children born to Edward and Mary Barrett. On the evidence, it was a close, caring family and remained so after the grievous blow of Mary's death in 1828. Forster poses intriguing questions about Elizabeth's treatment as an invalid and on injustices done to Edward. Afraid of losing the father she loved and needed, she lied to him about Robert Browning's courtship; and also to Robert, claiming that Edward kept her a prisoner, in isolation. He would have accepted the marriage, Forster suggests, but never forgave the couple after they eloped and fled to Italy. The book covers their 15-year marriage and Robert Browning's life with their son after his wife died in 1861. This biography is an invaluable addition to the record of the great Victorian romance. Illustrations not seen by PW.

The Life of Elizabeth Barrett Browning with new information

This is a thoroughly researched book, using new-found information, on the life of this enigmatic poet. She really was a remarkable woman, particularly in that time period; as was her equally remarkable husband, Robert Browning. The new information reveals a woman who shows unexpected strength, both physically and emotionally, that was completely antithetical to her adulthood at home, pre-marriage, as an invalid. Her father, also, emerges as more three-dimensional than the movie version and earlier books, depict him. Yes, he was a tyrant, but also capable of being charming and enjoying social events and family fun. All in all, if you want to know the real Mrs. Browning and her family, this is the book for you.

Hook for the Series Now

This book pulls you in right from the beginning. Yes it is the second book in the series. Which most people will then say it picks up so fast because its for the fans. However, these books at least the this one and the first are or could be read as 2 separated stories. That can be a really nice thing for those who want to get in to the series but only have a chance to read them out of order.

The chapters in the book are not to long at all. Being a faster reader you could finish this book quite fast. Others may take a bit more time, however it should still not take much more time then other readers. I also have not come across any hard vocabulary words that would stop someone from reading or enjoying the story line.

However, this is a book about a young girl in her 20s and her struggle with not only her fresh, new relationship with a young boy also in his 20s but who does not believe in the paranormal and her secret paranormal ability. So you can see a conflict there. But when they decide to take a week long trip out of the city (where it is much easier to block out the voices) to get some work done for their classes. She is met with a choice to except her roll and power and help those souls that are trapped and their love ones to move on or to keep it all hidden so her boyfriend does not think she is crazed or worse leave her forever.

Personally, I love stories like this. I enjoy the paranormal very much, I even watch much of it on TV. But there is something about reading it that takes me deeper in to it. Yes, it is a bit cliche' with the internal battle of excepting the power and letting the world know or hiding it forever to just seem normal and live a normal life, what ever that may mean.

Ghosts in The Park!

The second in Calloway's Southern Ghosts series, Ticket To Die takes place in an abandoned amusement park located in the fictional town of Abandon, Alabama. Everything about this town, from the park called Zephyr Land to the Abandon Inn, which is really just an old house, seems haunted.
Well ok, more than just "seems", but only certain "gifted" individuals really know this.
One of these folks is Amanda, a connoisseur of carousels, who has accompanied her boyfriend Jake to study the older ones there. She is then to write a research paper on how this carousel could be improved that she hopes will get her an apprenticeship.
Meanwhile Jake, a rising engineer, hopes to study the construction of the roller coasters.
Only they both quickly discover that something has gone horribly wrong, probably intentionally, that led to several deaths. The voices from beyond spend most of the remaining story trying to convince Amanda to help them get justice, while Amanda tries to convince Jake that she is not insane.
First, the degree to which the coasters and carousel are described is amazing. I'll definitely never look at coasters quite the same again. And I hope people always build with the highest quality parts.
Also, this story features a colorful cast of characters, from the old woman who runs the hotel, and her husband who fancies himself reenacting the role of Confederate general, to a heartbreakingly cute set of twin 5-year-old girls. One of the central characters debuted in the first book of this series, and while it isn't strictly necessary to have read that, some of his references will make more sense if you have done.
Overall, this was a compelling read. I always find it interesting to examine the inner workings of Southern culture and the many and varied people who reside therein. So do not be alarmed by the vandalized sign, "die?" "ride?" same difference. Go ahead and get in line! And enjoy this bit of summer time.
